Does anyone know of a source to find out if the oil drain bolt head is 13 mm or is it 1/2”?

Long story short, dealer charged me to replace the drain plug (I use the term “charged” loosely, Lake Norman Chrysler Jeep Dodge, Cornelius, NC gave me an A$$ pounding without Vaseline to the tune of $26.) I contend they used the wrong socket on the drain plug, they contend I did. I relented until I can gather proof of the proper socket size. Any and all help is much appreciated.

13 mm yah sorry to tell you that autozone sells them for like 5 dollars around there, replaced mine because the dealership uses impact wrench and beat the hell out of it when I was getting my free oil changes. Once I started doing them I stripped the bolt so I bought a reverse socket set. learned my lesson if it has been done by the dealership in the past replace it while you can.

Thanks all, you've confirmed what I thought to be true. I just wish I had something official from FCA-Jeep that states the drain plug is in fact 13 mm.

I had a service manager and three techs telling me that the plug was 1/2" and my use of a 13 mm rounded off the head. I contend that their use of a 1/2" socket coupled with over tightening compromised the integrity of the head, then I stripped it with a 13 mm.

I know we aren't talking big $$$ here I just hate incompetence with the simple stuff. Then to tell me "our stuff is standard" exact quote from the service manager, when I know that the lug nuts are 19mm, the soft top bracket bolts are 10mm and the oil filter housing is 24mm just makes me want to prove the point even more.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone can direct me to a Chrysler spec.

It's pretty clear to me, that an M14 bolt is metric, unless I missed something in the last 65 years.

Welcome to the Forum!

I'm with you on this one. I just did my yearly oil change last night. I always use a 6-point 1/2" socket. I feel the 13mm socket is a little loose. The 6-pt 1/2" socket fits perfectly, although it took a little wiggling to get the socket off of the drain plug after torquing to 20 ft-lbs.

What many seem to forget is the fact that drain pugs are intentionally made of soft material to avoid stripping the threads in the drain therefore it is necessary to use only 6 point tools to remove and replace and in this case 13mm. BUT, in most cases 1/2" will work fine since 1/2" is less than .012" smaller than 13mm. With either, 6 point is the correct tool for the job.
