Power Steering Fluid Rises in Reservoir when Warm?

Looks like I may have just wasted my time going out to buy more ATF-4 for the power steering.

After a wheeling trip, I noticed my Power Steering fluid must have gotten too hot and I had some seepage at the pump which slung off the pulley and the reservoir cap was wet from expansion I assume.

At rest/cool, the reservoir was showing just a hair above the "Minimum" marker however after returning from the store, with the engine warm, I went to add some ATF-4 to the reservoir and noticed the fluid had risen to the "Maximum" line.

Question: Do I wait for it to cool and then fill up to the Max line or is it better to just leave it as is knowing the system expands when hot causing a mess?

But be cautious with the amount added. If you add too much, it will overflow again when hot. Best to add a small amount and then check again when warm to make sure it does not over flow and again after it cools down to make sure is close to mid way between min and max.

Top it up to the max only when cold. It will expand above the full line when fully warmed up. In your case if the pump seal is leaking, etc. you should consider adding a cooler to the system. Lots of good options.

Thanks for all the replies. I think the pump seal is leaking ever so slightly due to the overheating I experienced months ago on the trail. I added about 1 to 1.5 ounces this am.

I do want to add a PS cooler but I already added a trans cooler to the from of my radiator. Are there alternate locations to mount a cooler?

The fluid expands when its hot. It should be at the hot full line when the fluid is hot after about 30 minutes of driving. If its over suck some out. If you have a cold full line check it in the morning after your Jeep sat overnight, and fill it to that line. Either way will work in a PS system that has nothing wrong with it.

Hi Guys,

I have a almost the same issue. My vehicle is just 10,000 miles never been taken off road or roughly driven.
If I am driving in normal moderate or calm conditions everything is ok, but when I high rev the engine and drive with more kick downs and rough then I get oil vomited out of the expansion tank (reservoir).
Last week we were just drag racing with other jeeps and it did the same. Off road also does the same.
Note I only top it fluid to Max when HOT, and in the morning when its cold it drops to minimum.
First we thought its the steering pump, but steering very soft, no noise, and no foam in the reservoir when steering full lock right and left.

Its really annoying that when u park after a rough round then u see oil dropping everywhere from your jeep!!!

Anyone had the same issue?

Whats your opinion.

Started to have the same issue after upgrading the steering box to a PSC big bore box. Even just doing a lot of turning right after starting would cause the reservoir to over flow. Replacing it with a PSC reservoir and an in line cooler. Also replacing the lines while I'm at it. Should solve the problem.

After having a PSC reservoir, lines and cooler installed, no more overflow of the reservoir. But bot my big bore box and PSC pump make noise now. The are from the first batch and have a manufacturing issue. Getting new ones I the mail this week under warranty. Trying to get PSC to cover the labor cost now.
