Pricing out Modified Jeep

I'm thinking about selling my 1997 Wrangler that is VERY far from stock. I began listing all of the things I've installed over the years (that I could think of) and it's already a few pages long.

I realize I'm not going to get near what I have into it when I sell it, but I have no idea where to even start. I looked on craigslist local to me but most of the ones for sale are in very rough shape or have cheap puck lifts, etc.

How do you go about getting a starting list price out a modified Wrangler?

Thanks!

Look at the price of a similar condition untouched bone stock jeep and start there...

If yours is pristine and flawless other than mods... some folks will pay more than stock if they like your choice of mods and others would pay less...

If it's so far from stock that It's closer to being a buggy full of high dollar parts then often times it's value is in components and ur better off to part it out.

Typically less value then stock
If done really well maybe as valuable as stock same condition but a much smaller pool of potential buyers

Example my 98 sport under 40k miles
Warn full float rear
ARB lockers front and rear
Warn full size manual hubs all four wheels
On board air with York compressor
D44 rear
4.56 gears
Quality centerline aluminum wheels with 33 inch tires
AC Cruise control
Fully bead lined from day one
Full roll cage
Aftermarket bumpers with spare mount
4” lift
Terra low transfer case
Tom woods rear driveshaft with super short SYE
Gas tank skid
Corner armor
Disconnects
Ect

All for all that I paid 10K same I would have paid for stock 98 sport low mileage no rust
Which seller was happy to get as he had been trying to sell for a month

This is why I say start at stock value.... the more of the original jeep your mods remove the less it's worth BUT VERY expensive components can add value... example a $5000 front axle might help but not by nearly $5000....

Another example.... i generally won't even look at a modified jeep for sale because the chances that mods have been done to my standards are about 3%...

Usually mods on a jeep are like designer underwear.... spendy on day one but nobody else wants em on day two....

Exception to the rule is if you have a very tired neglected jeep, and you do the absolute minimum to get big tires, flashy wheels, and a jammin stereo in it along w some fancy seat covers and added lights.... then you can add a LOT of curb appeal to attract young or otherwise naive buyers and get more than what it's worth...

Having sold 16 of my Jeeps and making some profit on all of them, some people will pay for tasteful mods and some won't. Extensive mods = Lose your @$$ when selling. I personally wouldn't buy any Jeep that has been taken off-road to any degree. I paid $6000 for my 98', drove it for 2 years and sold it for $10,000. I paid $9500 for my Rubicon and had a ton of people wanting it for $14,000. It's never taken me over a week to sell any of my Jeeps.

p.s. Buyers love new 35" MT tires.:)

Thanks for all the feedback, it's no extreme rock crawler or anything but I certainly do off road it all over the country.

I'd like to think most of the work I've done was more tasteful than not, and despite all of the offroading it's seen, it is VERY well maintained. I just got back from a few week 7,000 mile wheeling trip and drove it the entire way there and back.

I'm only thinking of selling it to buy a four door so I can start taking the kids on these adventures now that they're getting older... here are some pics:

STOP thinking that....
Maybe get a 4 door but only if you can keep the tj...

You WILL regret it if you do sell it

When selling my last Jeep I went to car max for an appraisal, with no intentions of selling to them. How are you at story telling? I told them that I was thinking of selling, but hadn't made up my mind yet, and just wanted to know what they thought it was worth. The estimate was free. I sold it elsewhere later, and carmax was right on with their estimate.
