Radio cuts in and out

My radio cuts in and out. Before I sink the money into a new radio, do youse guys know of causes other than the radio itself?

Reading through other posts here some people discovered that the radio cutting in and out was associated with the rear wiper. However my jeep doesn't have a rear wiper!

My Jeep is a 2014 Willys. When I first got it, it only played CDs and Aux, the AM/FM did not work, but I could live with that.

Then it started cutting in and out every few seconds. It was a pain because I had already connected the Bluetooth and had to disconnect it. To follow the menu prompts all while it would cut out for a few secomds then come back was a pain!

When you say "radio cuts out" you are referring to sound from any source, or AM/FM?

Do you have a 130 or 130s head unit? If so, it is a known issue and the fix involves re-flowing solder on a portion of the board inside.

^^ while he isn't using an ideal heat source, you can get the idea

The sound cuts in and out, all sound CDs, Aux, voice menu, it all cuts in and out. The AM/FM never worked when I got it. Just nothing on AM/FM no static, no sound ever. The other functions all worked fine for several months, then started cutting in and out.

I had this problem. Started with the am/fm going in and out on occasion until it went out forevermore. I used Bluetooth connection and satellite and said f-it. But eventually the whole thing stopped making sound. Still had power but no tunes. A used radio on eBay/FB market place is easiest fix with no comparability issues. If you have Sirius, you have to pay 15 bucks to transfer radios. I also had Uconnect phone setup in mine. Not all radios out there may have what you got or want or the price sucks and you could try an aftermarket replacement.
However, I decided to fix the problem. It’s likely the same issue you have as it is somewhat common. Here is one of many videos you should watch if you want to fix it. I fixed mine 2 years ago and have no issues.

I have a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4 door. I have had the same problem for over a couple years and no one can seem to figure out what the problem is. I have had to cancel my SiriusXM subscription because it is just unbearable to listen when the radio cuts in and out. It doesn't matter what my input is. AM/FM radio, CD, Aux or Satellite. It used to cut in and out when I would first get in the jeep and start it up and would last about 15 to 20 minutes and then it would work. However once I turned the car off and started it up again it would go through the same issue. It progressively got worse and now it just cuts in and out all the time and never "fixes" itself. The AM/FM doesn't seem to work at all now. So I can listen to music going through an Aux cord that continually cuts in and out every 5 seconds. I took it to the dealership and they couldn't figure out what was going on either. I Do Not have the Uconnect system in my jeep as I have read other posts of similar issues with the UConnect. I have tried changing fuses, making sure my connections in the back with the rear wiper are all "connected. I am just at a loss for what is happening. I have seen lots of posts regarding this issue but nothing seems to address it. Have others experienced this issue. I don't want to have to spend thousands of dollars replacing my whole dash, I am certain it is an electrical issue but just don't know.

It was indeed just the radio. The easiest solution was to buy a used one off Marketplace, although that is risky. I lucked out and got a working one that has a computer screen on it. Granted, I don’t know if I personally think it’s an upgrade, it works, and has been working for many months now, God be praised!

There is a chance that you’ll just get somebody’s broken radio when you go used, but odds a fairly low.

Has anyone gotten the fix to work long term? I'm able to use a hot air station to reflow the solder, but it only lasts for maybe 2 weeks until it fails again. I don't have a soldering iron, and even if I did I don't think I'd be able to solder such a small chip. I would pay someone to solder the chip/board, but no electronics shop in Milwaukee will do it. They all say they only work on PCs, iPhones, etc. No car audio.

easiest fix is get an earlier version of the RES radio the ones after 2008 and before 2012 seem to be reliable
assuming you have a wrangler so high speed bus any from a minivan from those years is plug and play and as it is base radio plentiful and cheep at junkyards

be aware they come with and without buttons for uconnect module control and with and without built in sirius module as noted on radio face

the 2009-2011 don't have the solder joint issues and don not need a antitheft code

the 07-08 ones have a failure prone CD/mp3 drive

the solder joint issue is in the 2012 and newer ones

again only need security code if 2012 or newer
all the mygig are fairly robust (be sure you get from high bus vehicle like minivan as low bus like avenger/sebring will not work in wrangler)
REN non nav Harmon-Becker unit 2007-2010 some have sirius use external uconnect
RER top of line Nav Hramon-Becker 2007-2010 all have sirius and built in uconnect and
RBZ Mitsubishi non NAV replaced REN in 2010 ran thru 2018 in some vehicles most have sirius only external uconnect module
RHB Mitsubishi with Garmin Nav 2010 thru 2018 in some vehicles most have Sirius all are external uconnect module
RHR top of line NAV Harmon-Becker 2010-2018 in some vehicles all have sirius all have internal uconnect and have bluetooth music streaming

I have an app generates Harmon-Becker codes free
for 2012 and newer RBZ and RHB can get code off ebay sellers for under $10 with just radio serial number

For RBZ ans RHB prior to mid 2016 drives are PATA and locked to radio but mid 2016 whet to SATA HDD that is not locked
All harmon becker are unlocked PATA HDD
Only the RBZ and RHB will accept solid state drive as reolacement

I did this repair last year. It lasted until the first set of washboards. Then I ordered a new plug n play Sony from Trail 7..

the 430 RBZ is real common in junkyards as was used in 2010-2020 minivans and toward the end of the run when backup camera was fed mandated that became the base radio
all the minivan are the higher speed bus just like the JK
2016 and up are nicer as they have a SATA rather than a PATA/IDE HDD
swamping from a 130 to a 430 or 430N or 730N is just plug and play although for N may need a GPS capable antenna
late year ones have bluish instead of green button/knob back-lighting and the VW Routan minivan ones have red back lighting for buttons and knob

if sticking with 130 the 2010-2011 ones are usually problem free and don't use antitheft code
they changed in 2012 to add antitheft code and those got the poor solder joints and non removable sirius module
must be from high speed can ihs bus vehicle and if you have the external uconnect/hands free module option be sure to pick one with the hands free phone and voice command buttons

That is the earlier version of the RES radio (aka 130)

it has the larger ribbed cooling fan sirius module as shown in your picture

they have a larger stepped case and a less reliable CD/MP3 drive but do not typicaly have the solder joint issues of the newer versions

that earlier sirius module that once activates continues to work until it gets a individual sat module number specific kill singnal rather then diing after a certain date passes

I I had issues with that RES radio I would get a newer one from the junkyard from a 2010 or 2011 high speed bus vehicle like a minivan (town and country or grand caravan or vw routan) or a jeep liberty or dodge nitro or journey)
will be plug and play in your JK
just be aware they come both with and without sirius and with and without buttons to control external hands free uconnect module

so if you have hands free uconnect be sure to pick on with the voice command and telephone buttons - otherwise does not matter

also if you want sirius module be sure to get one that has the sirius logo on the face

and avoid other low speed bus vehicles like patriot/compass/grand cherokee/aspen/durango/dakota/avenger/sebring/200/300/charger/challanger/magnum

by staying before 2012 you avoid the anti theft code issue and the bad solder joint issue.
