Okay so I want to regear my front axle to 4.10. I have done pretty much everything on vehicles except axles and automatic transmissions. I just need a good write up or a good book that will walk me through the steps I will need to follow (preferably with the Jeep Dana 30). I do not have a press, but maybe it is time to buy one. What size would I need? Yes I know that most people have shops do this and I could easily come up with the money, but I want to learn and try it out for good or bad.

If you are looking to go with 4.10s just do what I did. I found a dana 30 from a 4 cyl. tj that came factory with 4.10s. I picked it up for $300 and I should be able to get $150 out of my 3.07 gear dana 30.
all in all I will only have $150 into my dana 30 gear swap :)

Thanks for the information, but I want to do the gear install. This is not about money it is about learning something new. Even if it costs me more in the long run I am okay with that. I just want to learn and have fun working on my Jeep. So any websites or books to help me out would be appreciated.

Google search

" gear install jeep"

there is a really good write-up on a popular forum. He did a very good job, made it seem easy although doing you own gearing is not recommended-even by the more experienced techs. I would try it If my jeep was not my DD. Good luck :)

Mine is my daily driver, but I usually ride the motorcycle to work when it is nice out. Yep I understand you need to regear both the front and back. I picked up a whole rear axle with an ARB in it last week that is geared to 4.10. I run 3.73 right now with 31s, but 33s are in my near future. I have the auto tranny.

Hey, Doc:

I, too want to regear my Dana 30. I am actively working on replacing my D35 with a Ford 8.8 that is already geared to 4.10. Bill Ansell's article "Gettin the Gears Done" at pirate 4x4 is a must read. The bear its getting all the proper tools. The job simply cannot be done without them and some are prohibitively expensive. Fortunately I have a friend who used to do gearing and is letting me borrow the tools. As far as a press goes you can probably take your new pinion to a machine shop and have them press the bearings on for you. When I do mine I'm going to drop the axle to make it easier to work on.

I have been searching multiple states on craigs list for a 4.10 geared axle so far no luck. Daveys jeeps in ohio wants over 600 dollars. And I worry a donor axle maybe damaged from a collision; I know mine is in good shape.

It will likely be next year before my ford axle is ready and I can afford the swap but I look forward to your progress in regearing.

Yes I have the stock D35 with a ARB locker and chrome-moly axles on the way. I do some pretty hard wheeling, but will never go above 33s. I have done quite a bit of research and everyone I have spoken with said this will be fine including Jerry.
