I've recently had my rear main seal replaced together with an mechanic and used proper loctide 518 as recommended and did everything like advised to.

and now it leaks much more than before

any suggestions? took us 6 hours and wasn't really cheap..

common mistakes? what did we **** up?

Are you 100% sure it’s the rear main, maybe the valve cover gasket? Replaced my valve cover gasket and that stopped 75% of my drips. I’ll be tackling my rear main somewhere in the future.

it got much worse after replacing the rear main seal, so I guess it got ripped while replacing.. I've read in the forum that there is a 50/50 chance to rip it and many people did it twice.

unfortunately there is no jeep repair place in thailand, where I can have it done profesisonally... so I had it done at a normal garage here and just told them what todo with the tutorial in my hand standig next to them for 6 hours. and will do again now a second time as soon as I get the parts from amazon

The first time I did mine (1987 4.2) I didn't loosen all the crankshaft bearing caps. I had a difficult tome getting the upper seal started and may have damaged it. Replacing the RMS the first time stopped most, but not all, of the leak.

The second time I replaced the RMS I loosened all 6 of the remaining crankshaft bearing caps. The upper seal came out easily and using the little plastic shoehorn that came with the Fel-Pro RMS set, I was able to get the upper seal in with just a bit of fiddling.
Cleaning the lower cap to spotless clean and putting a tiny dab of sealant on the sides of the cap completed the job. Be sure to not get any sealant on the top of the cap where it could interfere with the fit of the cap to the block.
DON'T FORGET to tighten and torque all 7 bearing caps.

Good Luck, L.M.

I'm wondering if I just think it spills more oil now or if it's actually the valve cover gasket which was mentioned a few times, that's still leaking. I guess there is no way to tell without just replacing the valve gasket and see? Replacing the valve cover looks at least much more easy so I can probably have that done next and see if its still leaking underneath, and if so do the rear main seal again? or what do u guys think?

Like said I have to order every piece from the US which is a huge pain since shipping is about $50 each time, even for a $10 gasket.

maybe I have the feeling it spills more because I've "new oil" and new filter now.. bought the 2002 jeep sahara 3 years ago and have no clue when the previous owner changed it last time. They did few bush fixes I've discovered over time because lack of fitting parts here. Also the jeep had only 24.000 miles - 32.000 now.. benefit of living on a small island.

thanks for your feedback

uhm, just checked the valve cover and I would say that definitely looks like a leak there.

damn it! I should have checked it in the first place before going thru all the hassle of replacing the RMS. Also I've already ordered all gaskets to re-do the RMS replacement yesterday which is already shipped by amazon and was about $100 .. but hey.. better than doing the RMS a 2nd time and still have the same leak.

is it ok to only order the felpro kit? https://www.amazon.com/Fel-Pro-VS50458R-Valve-Cover-Set/dp/B000C2CNMY

I've seen some recommend to also order
* Dorman 47079 HELP! PCV Elbow
* Dorman 47057 HELP! PCV Elbow
* Dorman HELP! 42344 PCV Valve Grommet (2x)
* DORMAN 47128 PCV Hose

any need for that? As mentioned shipping is $50 so I wont bother about adding some $5 extra elbows or clips but I think mine look fine

thanks guys for helping figuring it out.. will keep you posted :)

@mipa When you change out your valve cover gasket keep the metal ferrules that are under the bolts that hold down the cover. Inexperienced mechanics will throw those away and you will be royally screwed if they do. I’ve searched high and low for those ferrules and you cannot buy them or anything like them anywhere. Except maybe a junkyard off another Jeep. You do not get new ones with any gasket I’ve looked at.

If perhaps they are already missing you might be able to make them if you have access to a machine shop.
