I thought they fixed the issues with the paint bubbling due to galvanic corrosion. Was wiping my Jeep down after washing it and noticed paint bubbling right above my tailgate hinge. This was one of the reasons I traded in my JKU. I also noticed that the paint is very faint and you can see the primer around the hinge. I guess the paint still sucks on new Jeeps too. Anyone else had this problem? I’m guessing the dealer will want the vehicle for weeks to fix this?

They said I’m within the warranty time frame but at 99,000 kms, I am over the 60,000 km quoted for the warranty. They are going to submit the request but the guy said he wasn’t confident they would assist.
I get that a fan or hose with 99,000 kms of run time is past the 60,000km/3mnth warranty, but paint should just be time related. There’s no way a new car two years into ownership should have corrosion already on it.

The problem is that they paint the doors, tailgate and hood with the hinges already bolted on. The metal underneath the hinges is only primer/E coat.

So, should we all go and take off all our hinges and paint underneath? Seems like it would be PITA, but if it will prevent this problem, I'd probably do it...

Painting the doors and hinges separately would solve a lot of this. The problem is that the bolts would get tool damaged if they were painted first. So FCA could use a good primer coat before assembly or paint separately and use black coated bolts. The problem is that the coated bolts will develop surface rust after awhile.

So I'm thinking about getting a JL in the next year or so and stumbled on a 40 page post on the other forum about corrosion around the hinges. Looks to be pretty wide spread but as we all know you only post problems if youre having them, not if everything is fine. Wondering how wide spread the issue is. Please post if you're hinges are corroding and what your MY is.
Thanks!

Don't know what hinges you're referring to, but on the JL the hood, the doors and the hinges are all aluminum, and the tailgate is magnesium. Certainly if there is a corrosion issue it isn't rust. Is it where the hinges attach to the body, which is still steel. I can see where the dissimilar metals might cause galvanic action under some circumstances, but I've seen no problems whatsoever on my '18 JL.

A simple Google search or on the forums will show you there are many threads on this issue, even YouTube videos. Many others are having issues with corrosion where the hinges meet the panel due to a number of reasons. Add to the fact that the bolt that joins those pieces is steel is a big problem. Do a YouTube search as well.

Also many report electronic gremlins, frame weld issues, and steering issues.

This came up after I read through a 40 page thread on JL forum. Looks to be decently wide spread, or just the appearance of wide spreading from multiple people posting about it, hence the poll. Is if just a not so common problem but 100% of the people are having the issue or is it more wide spread throughout. I have some galvanic corrosion between the aluminum hinges and steel door on my JK with no barrier in between. I think FCA fixed that somewhere around 2014 (I have a 12), with some sort of gasket between the dissimilar metals. My corrosion only came up after like 5-6 years. These JLs are all less than 3 and some are less than a year old. Is the problem just a first few MY thing before they get the aluminum doors figured out or is it still a problem? or maybe not a wide problem at all.

LOL FCA has know about this for years and still having issues. It is the dissimilar metals that are causing the issues, In 15 they started puttin gaskets behind the hinges. I guess that cost too much.

I know this a an old post but my 2019 is starting to experience the bubbling at the hinges, took it to the dealer and was told to wait because the others will start to do the same and then they can fix all the hinges at once instead of coming back with the non repaired ones start to bubble. Apparently they only treat and repair the ones that are bubbling instead of doing all the hinges even though its a known issue. Apparently the warranty for this has been extended because of it being a common issue. Just frustrating that I have to wait for the bubbling to start on the others to resolve the matter pro-actively..

I just bought mine 3 months ago a 202 Willy. 6200 miles and washed it and noticed it around more on the passenger and heavy on the tailgate. My dealer don't want to be bothered at all. I am not thrilled with the matter. I am in the talks with Jeep Cares at the moment. I live in a cold climate, so I don't want this to get worst by next year.
