I thought they fixed the issues with the paint bubbling due to galvanic corrosion. Was wiping my Jeep down after washing it and noticed paint bubbling right above my tailgate hinge. This was one of the reasons I traded in my JKU. I also noticed that the paint is very faint and you can see the primer around the hinge. I guess the paint still sucks on new Jeeps too. Anyone else had this problem? I’m guessing the dealer will want the vehicle for weeks to fix this?

2018 Jeep Wrangler Sport JLU

Paint is bubbling around the door hinges, including on the hinges. Also on front edge of hood. All of these parts are aluminum including the door hinges.
Does anyone have paint issues on the steel fenders? I am trying to determine if this is a primer problem or just crappy paint quality.
When Ford started manufacturing the F150 body panels from aluminum, they had to change their painting systems. The big question is how does Jeep prepare a body that is both steel and aluminum?

Dont call it a paint problem or a primer problem if you raise a warranty claim or the warranty advisor will apply the 36/36 warranty. Its a corrosion problem resulting from galvanic reaction with iron particles through cross contamination from tooling and general lack of cleanliness. The corrosion on the surface falls under the 5 year warranty provision.

The body, doors, hood, tail gate and all the hinges are bolted together before the body is painted. If the mating surfaces are not spotless, any contamination that gets entrapped sets up the corrosion. I believe the hinges are magnisium which also does not play well when matted to other materials.

The 5 year corrosion warranty starts on the in-servicd date. How close are you to 5 years

I have a 2020 JLU Sahara and I have commented on this problem on other Jeep forums. I have 50 k on my vehicle now and am the second owner. I have also taken it to the dealer body shop after speaking with Jeep Cares. I also am still waiting to hear back from the dealer body shop and it has been almost a month.

I was told my warranty had expired.
There is a class action suit in motion for this problem. If they are successful, all Jl and JT owners and leases beginning in 2018 will be covered for the repairs.
If this is a primer issue like I suspect it is, the paint will have to be stripped off and the panels primed properly before repainting. Otherwise it will happen again and again. FORD has special painting equipment to paint and repair the aluminum truck bodies.

It will indeed continue to happen. I had my Jeep looked at by an auto body person.
‘there no way to really remedy this unless thebare metal surfaces are properly prepared. Gonna be expensive after warranty.
some people are even being denied the warranty fix because Stellantis isn’t paying the dealers.

Started the process this morning to try and get my dealer to fix the problem. 2018 Wrangler JL with all 4 door hinges bubbling. Dealer was not optimistic since warranty has expired, however, many dealers seem to be taking care of the problem using the 50,000 mile bumper to bumper non-corrosion warranty. Wonder if this will work. I have 33,500 miles on my JL.

It timed out according to the dealer. Purchase date was August 2018.
Corrosion under the paint is the cause of bubbling paint. It is not a paint defect but corrosion under the painted surface. The warranty corrosion on visible body panels and surfaces is 5 years unlimited mileage. You are still in the warranty period.

Have the warranty administrator take pictures of the bubbling locations and escalate that to corporate for approval if they have doubts.

This is an update to my post of 8-22-2022.

My Jeep went in for the corrosion issue last Monday, 8-29-2022. It is now the weekend, and I was called, and they said they would have it today, but I am doubtful. When I contacted Jeep Cares, they told me to contact a Jeep dealer with a body shop. Fortunately, my dealer has a body shop. They looked it over, took pictures and measurements, and a month later, it is now in getting the problem taken care of. It took almost a month for FCA to approve the claim.

One of the things I worry about though is how well they will remount the hinges on the doors and the doors to the vehicle. The gaps on my Jeep were close to perfect and I hope I will get it back with the same alignment; as well as the paint matching being spot on. We will see.

They did provide me with a rental car and at no charge and the dealership has been very good about the whole process so far. When I spoke with the rep at the dealership, I asked how many Jeeps they have had to repaint so far and how many have had been returned for the same issue. The rep replied they have done quite a few and only one was returned for the same issue, and that was because they did not rework one of the doors. Now if they even think the door or any other surface looks bad, they repaint it. I will update as soon as I get the vehicle back.

I know the premium cost of the Jeeps as well as other cars right now is due to governmental bull-crap standards, but with that high price, the factory should make sure they are turning out only top quality. I think Jeep Toledo needs to revisit their quality process in the paint department. I would hate to now spend over 50k for a new Jeep, let alone over 40k for a used one and have a paint issue.

I will update as soon as I get the vehicle back.

Update to my Jeep Sahara and the corrosion. Picked the Jeep up on Tuesday after the Labor Day weekend. It was raining and it appeared ok. After getting it home I noticed what looked like big claw marks in 3D on the driver door after turning on my garage lights. Took the Jeep back on Wednesday to have them look at it. It was a buffing problem and they fixed it immediately that morning. Took the Jeep back home and that evening put the new Rubicon take-off rims and tires on the Jeep. When my son got in to test drive it and went to adjust the mirrors, the passenger mirror was not working. Checked all normal clip harness connections as you would when re-installing the doors, but all looked good. Except found one of the rubber cords on the driver side panel broken. Took the Jeep back the next morning and explained what was wrong. They fixed it immediately as one of the tech's did not connect the mirror wiring inside the door panel. Did not hear yet about the rubber cord.

All in all, they did what appears to be a pretty good job. Little things had to be taken care of, but the paint finish looks really good. Glad to have my Jeep back. Hoping now I have no further corrosion issues.
