Strange Sway Bar light blinking saga

Ran the JKUR through the car wash yesterday. Got the underbody wash, which I typically do. No issues on the way home. Took it around the corner today and the sway bar light is blinking. I pressed the button a bazillion times, nothing. Disconnected the negative battery cable for about an hour, no help. Then I took the sway bar fuse out, tapped it a few times, reinstalled it and the light went off.

Think maybe the unit got wet from the under body wash? Whats the life expectancy of these units?

Thanks Bob. Where's the plug? Under the plastic skid plate?

Thanks

OK. I took off the smart bar, if thats what its called. The part with the electrical connection. When I broke the bolts free, a ton of water poured out. Rusty water. I hit it with some compressed air and wiped it down good. Can I hit it with some brake parts cleaner? Should anything in here be greased up before I put it back together again?

Thanks Lloyd. The very beginning shows that my sway bar disconnect does not work. No movement when the sway bar button is pressed on mine. I drove over to the dealer and spoke with the service tech. He told me that replacing the entire unit, the smart bar and the motor I guess you'd call it is about 1400 bucks. I youtubed replacing that and it looks pretty straight forward. I mentioned I could probably replace it myself and he said that the new sway bar unit needs to be calibrated to the specific vehicle it's installed on. Is that the case? Doesn't sound right to me.

There are companies like G2 and Teraflex that offer a Dual Rate sway bar for 800-1000 or Currie offers a single rate for around 500. Bad thing is you won’t be able to use your electronic disconnect, good thing is you wont need to disconnect. Mine crapped out on me and I’m leaning towards the G2 setup after looking at it compared to the Teraflex. I want the Dual Rate to keep similar on road handling characteristics.

Well, my light went off. Not confident everything is good though. Like I said, when I took the smart bar out and plugged it back in nothing with the button pressed. Interesting the light went off. I assume the light will blink if there is a problem with the assembly. Clearly I have an issue.

Quadratec is having a sale on MOPAR Rubi sway bar assemblies. What I can make out of pricing is the whole unit is near 3 Grand. Quadratec has them for 1700 right now.

I gotta think this thing through.

Do you use it a lot?

You can buy manual disconnected for less than $100, and a Hellwig front sway bar for $180.

$1700 is a ton of cash for something you may not use often (if ever) and could replace for $500 (Currie) or less ($300)

For only an investment of time you can take it off break it down and clean out the old grease; then polish the plunger and re-grease everything with quality waterproof grease. After these steps you should exercise the Disconnect regularly to keep everything well lubed. If you go into water again, remove, clean, polish and re-grease. Up to you if you follow this advice, or convert to manual, or remove and replace with something else.

WELL this is getting better. Wife took it out on the Parkway. She said it suddenly started to feel really loose, she pulled over to the side of the road and all idiot lights and chimes as well as the "HOTOIL" light went off and the Jeep died. Couldn't re-start it. Called my son who got out there and was able to get it started and got it home. I just woke up (working over nights) and try to start it and nothing. All lights and chimes going off, no start. Take the key out of the ignition and it's still chiming like the key is in with the door open.

WTF is going on with this thing? Battery? Computer? Did the engine just take a dump?

Just wanted to circle back and give an update, if/when someone else finds this thread via a search.

Narrowed it down to an electrical problem (obviously), not sure if its the plug or the smart bar itself. I disconnected the plug from the smart bar and the Jeep operates as it should, however the sway bar light is still blinking along and the check engine light is on.

I'm gonna take it to a Jeep specialist near me, and see what my options are.

Truth is I want the lights off and this rig to be whole again. Just don't wanna dump a ton of money into a 10 year old, 140,000 mile rig. We'll see what my options are and I'll advise here.

Short term plan is to get a JLU or a JT in a year or two and want to use this as a trade in or outright sale, so it needs to remedied.
