Those controversial plastic bug deflectors

I recently picked up a plastic bug and rock deflector, and wanted to share my experience with the community. It's one that screws AND sticky tapes to the underside of the hood. I got it used, for the low low price of the time it took me to install it. Long story short I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! For every day standard size Washington State bugs they are flung up and over the windshield as if from a invisible force field! I was driving into the sun, and next to the Naches river the other day and I could spot the bugs from a hundred feet or more, and as I approach they zip up and over the jeep as if pulled by an invisible wire. Honestly, it really works! Definitely look into picking one up if you hate washing the dried up insect carcasses from your windshield every day. I will add that this magical plastic force field generator is relatively not effective for larger inects, even if they associate as being lighter weight bugs, and my JK windshield does it's part in population control for the big beautiful bugs and the trans-slender bugs as well. Bet they won't have the guts to buzz around in front of my jeep again.

I like the bug deflectors to protect the part of the hood that arches down from rock chips. I did a different approach, I just got a strip of PPF and put it over that part of the hood

We don't have fall in Florida, so 24/7 flying critters which include the Florida State Bird "the Love Bug". My '14 came with a deflector, but shattered in the first 6 months when it stopped a rock. Prolly could use another one, but I do like the window vents for keeping the interior smelling fresh and keeps the rain out.

In extreme south Georgia, we are very familar with lovebugs also. But I've never had a bug deflector that worked. All they have done for me is protect the leading edge of the hood from rock chips.

I had one long ago on an early 2000s Ford Expedition which I was generally happy with and found it rather effective. Then one day, I stumbled upon a discussion regarding their potential impact on fuel economy which spawned more questions in my mind. As it turns out, their functionality comes not from directing air more efficiently over the windshield. Quiet the opposite actually. They actually disturb the airflow, creating more or less an eddy of air....a buffer so to speak...which negatively impacts aerodynamics to some extent. I decided to do an unscientific comparison of long interstate drives with and without the deflector installed. On that particular vehicle, it turned out to be a full MPG loss with the bug deflector on. Granted, that Expedition may have been slightly more aerodynamic than our Wranglers, but it did have similarly poor fuel economy and I'm not looking to make my Wrangler's fuel economy potentially worse than it already is.

I think this is the first time I've seen a post about negative impacts to aerodynamics with regard to a Jeep Wrangler. Essentially saying it negative impacts the aerodynamics of a brick. Good post though and with regard to the discussion, if a bug shield redirects bugs and stops a rock/rock chips then it probably would pay for itself fairly quickly.

I actually exclusively use Rain-X washer fluid which I've found helps keep them from sticking so bad. I made the switch to it from the cheap blue stuff for other reasons but it's an added benefit. The cheap blue stuff sucks for a couple of big reasons. Despite the claims on the bottles, it readily freezes at the nozzles themselves whereas the RainX stuff doesn't so easily. The biggest reason for me was learning the harmful impact the blue stuff has on your paint as it oversprays or runs off the sides of your vehicle.

I had a bug deflector on a '89 F350 a loooooong time ago. The only thing it really seemed to deflect from the windshield was the washer fluid when I was trying to clean the windshield off. The windshield caught plenty of bugs, rocks, and freeway debris.
