Tone Wheel Replacement?

How difficult is it to change out a tone wheel on a JK Wrangler?

I recently had my brake pads and rotors replaced on my 2010 Jeep Wrangler. The drivers side rotor wouldn't come off and I couldn't back the parking brake off. I have never used my parking brake because I knew it was weak, and during the attempted brake job I could remove the rotor about an inch and could clearly see the insides were in poor shape. Decided to take it to a trusted shop instead of grabbing the big-a$*-hammer and possibly doing more damage by forcing it off.

Sure enough the brake innards had been pretty worn. Shop fixed it up and put the new rotors and pads on. However, in addition to all of this I have had an ABS light on, and they found that the cause was a worn tone wheel on the rear drivers side. The backing plate has become rusted, maybe bent? The shop says the ABS sensor wore into the tone wheel. I actually have the ABS sensor and am ready to put it on, but won't do so if the tone wheel will just chew it up.

I'd like to fix it and have never replaced a tone wheel, so what are your guys thoughts? Anybody have instructions or can point me to where I can find them? Plenty of videos on sensor replacement but none on tone ring replacement.

:beerdrinking:There's a youtube vid on axle seal replacement. If I recall, everything is "stacked" - seal, tone ring, spacer, bearing (not necessarily in that order). But I don't know that the tone ring can be removed separately like the video above.

But as PaisanoJKU mentioned... replace the axle shafts! I replaced the rear shafts due to leaky seals.

To just fix the seals requires all of the above parts to be cut off, and a shop press to assemble new parts to the old shaft.

Or.. just replace the whole darn shaft and get on with your day!

Think I paid about 160 for my axle shaft, then 10ish for new studs. took maybe 30-45 minutes to replace the axle. That includes jacking up the jeep. Used the rotor as a slide hammer, thanks to a suggestion on here in my thread, and my axle shaft popped right out. I may have been lucky though since I had a seal replaced under warranty maybe a year before so the axle was removed by a shop previously.

You would have to remove the seal before the tone ring, and probably purchase a new seal as well, I may be wrong on that part.

Just watched the vid and that's not a jk rear axle shaft. That seemed "easy" to remove. Ours, you have to press off or cut, same with seal. i recommend just upgrading the shaft. You would probably spend more having a shop install a new tone ring

Thanks everyone for the advice! So... Some of you suggest cutting the damn thing off, which suggests to me the job of replacing the tone wheel alone is a PITA. I think I'll have a friends shop do the work since he will have a lot easier time pressing the axle seals back in.

I'm back everyone. I had a shop replace my tone wheel. Since replacement, my traction control, stability control and ABS lights have been going off around fast turns. Also occurs when cruise control has been set after 2-3 minutes. Anybody have any suggestions?

I've got a similar problem with my TCS and Brake light coming on when I use cruise control.

The cruise connection is a fairly recent revelation. In the past, I'm sure it came on randomly on long highway trips - but didn't necessarily notice it with cruise.

It started happening when I put on new rims/tires.

Since I changed my axles - and cleaned the ABS sensors on the rear, like you, it came on almost immediately after engaging cruise.

No idea what the actual cause is.

No... started after brand new tires.

98% of the time - no issue. Normally, I'd see it after being on the highway for an hour or more. On the Colorado trip, it'd come on every few hours - engine-off to reset) - then be fine for a while longer.

It was just this last highway trip in May when it came on almost immediately after activating the cruise. Can't say I noticed the relationship before. I may have had cruise on when it happened before, but not immediately.

And I believe I reset it... and hit the cruise again, and got the light immediately the 2nd time. This caught my attention, as it never happened like this before.
