Looking at Viair 400p's. Is the automatic function really worth it?

Yes. I have 400P; best friend has Automatic. It was about 50 bucks more four years ago when we bought them. I have no idea where that fifty bucks I saved is now, but everytime we're refilling tires together I wish I had his Viair. :D

I own a Viair 400P.

At first I thought that I should have opted for the 400P-Automatic instead so that I could have taken advantage of the pressure controlled on-off switch but decided that the feature isn't really worth the additional cost if the compressor is only used for airing up tires.

I purchased a 25' 1/4" Flexzilla air hose and open chuck to replace the coiled nylon hose supplied with the 400P. The Flexzilla hose is easier to use than the coiled hose because I can reach all four tires (and all four on a rig parked next to me) without having to adjust the position of the compressor. It fits into the Viair carry bag just fine. One good feature is that the Flexzilla Pro hose is easily repaired in the field.

As for the open chuck, it clips on and off the valve stems quickly and allows me to easily move from tire to tire without building up air pressure in the hose. Unfortunately, I did not discover until I was in the middle of nowhere airing up after a run that I had been shipped a closed chuck by mistake. I thought I was screwed and would have to continually turn the compressor on and off between tires, however the Flexzilla hose is rated to 300 psi (double the maximum pressure rating of the compressor) and I had plenty of time to move from tire to tire with the compressor running even with a closed chuck. Nonetheless, I had the vendor ship a replacement open chuck upon my return to civilization.

Although I like the convenience of a hard-mounted onboard compressor, since I have more than one offroad vehicle with tires to air up the 400P is more versatile. I do not regret my purchase decision.

I bought that same hose to use with my 400P thinking at 300psi it would be fine and sure as crap the very first time I used it I was not quick enough and the chuck shot off like a rocket. I was not happy. There was no way the pressure got close to 300psi. Of course the open chuck would have prevented that but I had not even thought of that until it was too late. I was able to find the chuck and had a small hose clamp so I was ok but the chuck was about 50 yards away.

I really like my 400P but wish I would have spent the extra money and got the 400A. I will say when I had my 4 door the coiled hose was tight and I had to move the pump from side to side but now with a 2 door it is not an issue .

I have the Viair 450p automatic and it does a great job. I would recommend the automatic in which ever model you choose. I also have the 25' 1/4" Flexzilla air hose and would also recommend this as a replacement air hose. It is a lot faster/easier to use. I kept the one in the kit for a backup. On my last trip I used my Viair 14 times for after trail airing up. 315/75/17 aired back up to 34 psi from 15-17 psi. took about 5 minutes a tire if I remember correctly, but I was not rushing. My son was using a twin ARB under hood mount and our air up times were pretty close. I just had to get mine out and he was ready to go after opening the hood. He also has an outlet plumbed to his front bumper. I like his set up, but I already have a compressor that is just as fast. His is convent though.

I got the 450P auto as well.

Not sure about what happened with the new hoses, but I have the yellow one and it reaches all 4 tires on my jku without moving the compressor.

On a side note, when I go on a leisure runs by myself, I get a lot of folks driving by ask me if I'm all good when they see my hood open. Bless their caring hearts, but just to ease all the concerns(and because I've been wanting too for a long time), I'm setting up a quick disconnect using powerpole connectors.

I picked these up and will splice them in.

Will run this through the firewall in zip tie to my rock hard A pillar support.
4 Foot long 10 Gauge PowerPole to battery terminal Rings Adapter cable | eBay

and splice this into the 450p
2 Foot 12 Gauge Powerpole Extension Cable | eBay

I talked to viair and they said 12AWG would be good to go for the splice.

Sheeet.. I just noticed that we got the same wheels too. Hahaha....

I have the 450P Automatic and have had good experiences with it. I find the automatic feature useful, especially if you're filling a lot of tires.

I did have one incident where the compressor fell off the back of the jeep and broke the quick connect fitting when it hit the ground. I foolishly assumed that all I'd need to do was go buy a new $3 fitting at the hardware store and it'd be fine. No.

VIAIR decided to permanently bond all the threaded fittings in the compressor. What should have been a very easy fix turned into a giant pain. I used too much force trying to loosen the fitting and broke metal instead. In the end, I had to remove the handle and cut the tube that runs inside it near the quick connect end. I threaded that tube with a 1/4"-18 NPT tap and installed new standard fittings.

I also had to replace the pressure switch. I used a sealed version, the original was unsealed.

It's not as clean looking as the original, but now if I have an issue with a fitting, it's much easier to fix. A non-automatic model could be retrofitted with a pressure switch by doing the above. The compressor hasn't had any issues since the fix and I've used it extensively.

reading this thread and with Winter coming and a heated garage I am going to find a place to permanently mount the 400.

I bought the 400P Automatic and think it’s great. The chuck and gun that comes with it are great. You don’t have to switch off the compressor between tires. I think this may save wear and tear on the compressor.

Also, Amazon had them on sale for $132 when I bought mine. I have a thread about that out here somewhere.

I use my open flow air chuck with a Flexzilla hose. The thread is standard 1/4" NPT.

Is the hose assembly on the 88P removable? You may need to go to a different air hose in order to use the air chuck you purchased.
