I have an idea to wire a light strip along the bottom edge of the rear window (top edge when the window is swung up so the light shines into the rear of the Jeep). I could do this with a manual switch, but would like if the light would just automatically turn on whenever the tailgate is opened. I noticed there is a message on the dashboard if the tailgate is not closed fully, which means there must be a wire sending that message from the tailgate. Does anyone have any idea which wire this would be and could I hypothetically splice into it to give power to the light anytime the tailgate opens up?

I went the easier route for my tailgate light. I ran a wire from the tailgate up to the dome light on the soundbar.
I been using this for a minute very satisfied with it easy just put in in cigarette lighter plug I did too mu Jeep came without subwoofer only wire for a cig plug so made Hole put cig I bought and voila working for year now I like it have. Remote to control brightness and mode too.
The "liftgate" sensing wire is the Violet/orange coming off the swing door. It grounds when the door is opened. You could rig up a relay to that wire and then run the light off the relay, but you're probably better off just connecting to the dome light.
