I've talked myself into doing the reasonable thing - sticking with a smaller, lighter tire more suited to the bulk of the driving my JK does. So, now I'm trying to find that biggest of small tires. 285/75R17, 295/70R17 and 255/80R17 were all in for consideration - odd ball sizes with very few choices. I looked at Toyo and Nitto, of course, but decided I really didn't care to pay the penalty in terms of either weight or price to pick up a set when compared to either Cooper of BFG.
What I really want is a set of Duratracs (or Kelly Safari TSR?). Sadly, I'm just not interested in a 285/70R17 or 33x12.5R17. While significantly wider than stock, it is only a tiny bit taller. The whole size just sort of falls into "might as well get another set of stock tires" territory for me. The real question is this - where do 255/80R17 BFG KM2 and 295/70R17 Cooper STT actually measure out? Do they deserve to be included in the same "why bother" category?
Most of the AT tires I looked at were hugely disappointing in terms of tread design and weight (that "E" rating really adds pounds). I don't wheel as much as I'd like to, but a super mild tread with tiny voids (no self cleaning or mechanical keying) and no side biters just doesn't do it for me.
Ultimately, I might end up with a set of the KM2 as a natural successor to my stockers - slightly bigger, slightly heavier, slight more expensive, but not likely to really upset the applecart. I wish Interco weren't the only ones I know to make a 34x10.5R17 (and in only one tire).
