I've talked myself into doing the reasonable thing - sticking with a smaller, lighter tire more suited to the bulk of the driving my JK does. So, now I'm trying to find that biggest of small tires. 285/75R17, 295/70R17 and 255/80R17 were all in for consideration - odd ball sizes with very few choices. I looked at Toyo and Nitto, of course, but decided I really didn't care to pay the penalty in terms of either weight or price to pick up a set when compared to either Cooper of BFG.

What I really want is a set of Duratracs (or Kelly Safari TSR?). Sadly, I'm just not interested in a 285/70R17 or 33x12.5R17. While significantly wider than stock, it is only a tiny bit taller. The whole size just sort of falls into "might as well get another set of stock tires" territory for me. The real question is this - where do 255/80R17 BFG KM2 and 295/70R17 Cooper STT actually measure out? Do they deserve to be included in the same "why bother" category?

Most of the AT tires I looked at were hugely disappointing in terms of tread design and weight (that "E" rating really adds pounds). I don't wheel as much as I'd like to, but a super mild tread with tiny voids (no self cleaning or mechanical keying) and no side biters just doesn't do it for me.

Ultimately, I might end up with a set of the KM2 as a natural successor to my stockers - slightly bigger, slightly heavier, slight more expensive, but not likely to really upset the applecart. I wish Interco weren't the only ones I know to make a 34x10.5R17 (and in only one tire).

FWIW, I just picked up the Cooper Discovery ST Maxx in 255/80/17 and they are about 2" taller than the stock tires on my Jeep. The tread is a little more aggressive in person than it appeared in the pics. I have them mounted on 17" Rubi takeoffs and have not actually installed them on the Jeep yet because my Procal hasn't arrived. I was in the same state of indecision as you are, I drive about a lot (70-100 miles a day) in my Jeep so I went ahead with the Cooper ST Maxx because they were more of an AT. Im happy with them thus far, I cant wait to get them on before I head to Uwharrie this weekend.

I'm 99% convinced that I'm going to go with the KM2 255/80R17 to replace my stock SRAs (Sport S). I like the pizza cutter logic, and I'm not yet ready for the work/expense to "do 35s right". I am hoping that "save up for new tires" and "wait out more of the useful tread of the SRAs" will intersect nicely at some future point in time.

In the meantime? Enjoy them!

I like my Toyo AT2 extremes 285/75-17. They worked well on stock rims and total weight was not as bad as the advertised weight. running 28psi they are smooth on the highway and handle very well. I have 11000 miles on them and they have no visible wear. They are going to last forever based on the first 11,000 miles. That said dang I wished I went bigger lol. Really if I went out and my tires were gone I would replace them with the same.

How much does the Toyo AT2 Extreme 285/75-17 weigh? I'm In the same boat but could not find the weight. Thanks.

I have the Cooper STT 32x11.5's and they actually measure out to 31.8x11.4...fairly close to the advertised size....They have an excellent tread design and perform well in the sugar sand/mud I encounter in the NJ Pines....road manners are good to. Little bit noisey, but no problem...

I am at over 16000 miles now and they still are wearing like iron and looking good. They weigh around 60 lbs on the scale. a little less then Toyo claims.

To the OP,

The KM2 is a great tire, but does run small for it's size. Small as in short AND narrow. So if you want a narrow 33" KM2, you might as well buy the 35" KM2. I've had 37" KM2s rested next to my MTR 35" tires and they are the same size. BUT the KM2 is more narrow, which I love.

Another point is that most of the oddball sizes are going to be E-rated tires. They truly are brutal unless mounted to a 7,000 pound vehicle. I've had them before and I will never go back.

The new KO2 has been advertized as an E-rated tire only.... unless something has changed.

Lastly, someone mentioned the Toyo AT2. I have them on my S10 and they actually do look more aggressive in real life than in photos. But no sidewall tread :/ The tire itself is a nice, smooth, and decently aggressive tire though.

The KM2s do run on the smaller side of spec. The tread is narrower because it has scalloped shoulders unlike tires like the MTZ that have more square shoulders with tread that wraps over to the sidewall.

This is one of the reasons the KM2s are quieter than many MT tires.

KO2 spec sheet shows one C load range - LT265/70R17/C 112 S, and four D load range: LT275/55R20/D 115 S, LT275/60R20/D 119 S, 34x10.50R17/D 120 R, 37x12.50R17/D 124 R - and the 34x10.5R17 comes out to 33.5x10.6 in actual dimensions... which seems pretty nice.
