My drain plug is leaking. I purchased a new plug online, did not fit. Threads were to small.

Went to dealer and gave him year make model. 04 TJ 4.0 Sport. Came home to find out it was the same plug.

I cannot for the life of me find a plug that fits. This part number 5176215 is the part that is not fitting. Below are the pictures of the plug that does not fit.

Does anyone know the correct plug or what the deal is? My oil pan is original to my knowledge.

Thank you

Wouldn't the rubber seal prevent leakage past the threads if were seating flat on the pan?

Are there burrs, gouges or pits in the metal around the drain opening that might prevent the rubber from making a good seal?

Check to see if it is seating on the pan properly... maybe it is the pan and not the drain plug.

The rubber seal is what I like about the original plug. Its definitely the plug. The plug that is on there was actually replaced last year. I took it in for NYS inspection to valvoline and figured I would have them do the oil while I had it there. They "lost" the old plug. Never really payed attention to what the old plug looked like though.

When you buy a new oil pan, you get a new oil plug.
Figured the threads on the aftermarket would be made to fit the original plug. To me that would only make sense.

It's possible that your pan was changed at some point.
I installed a Crown aftermarket oil pan on my 05. The original drain plug is too small for the new pan.
Sounds like this is the scenario that is most likely the case. Same issue.

A) Take to ACE hardware and find the right thread size and pitch...unless you have a pitch gauge. Betting no.
B) Get a replacement that way. I’d go aluminum. You’ll strip a bolt before your strip the oil pan threads. Win win.

The "plug" is a steel bolt... it can't leak.... change the seal on the plug
Assuming your new plug HAS a seal.... if it doesn't, add one...

As stated match it up at a good hardware store get all the info regarding the threads used. Then Google magnetic oil pan drain plugs, Gold Plug is a good one. Call them up with thread pitch and size and they'll get the right plug to you. And you'll have the added benefit of a good magnetic drain plug.

Or take the plug to a good parts store with a patient parts man that is willing to try and match what you have.
