ok i have a 4cyl auto and everything seems to run fine. but when you get up to 55 mph it seems you would be better off jumping out and pushing no passing power or real power to get you on the on ramp. it this typical of the good old 4 cyl or might there be a problem with the trans in the upper gears?

My 88 or my 97 XJ with a 4.0 can run much more than 70......I get hole shots with mustangs and V-8 trucks all the time with 3.55 gears and 31" tires. I have had it bury the needle more than once. You must have the e-brake on
Now the 4 cyl. in my YJ is another story 65-70 tops. And thats pushing it

Welcome to the club, you do get more power with a manual trans (Only because you lose power in the torque converter), but not much....

I can also hit 70-75 with no issues, and 33's

I had a tj with a 4cyl auto. Your rig sounds normal to me. Wait till you go up mountain passes in it. I sold it and bought a 4.0 with a stick.

Right. I can easily reach and maintain 70 with my manual tranny. I've even taken it up to 85 at 4k rpms. The 4 banger with a 5 speed also has great acceleration if your running stock wheels.

i have an 89 yj 2.5 with 5-speed, a 3-in body lift and 33 in tires (hopefully the lift and tires are gonna go back to stock soon.) on flat highway i can only get it up to 45 in 4th gear with the pedal to the floor. any help?

Time to do a tuneup. O2 sensor, MAP sensor, new cap, rotor, plugs, air filter, oil change, fuel filter, seafoam the system, and then it should do 70-75 perfectly fine (speedometer 60mph = 70mph with 33's).

My 95 2.5 5 speed I've had mine topped around 88 mph mine does 80 no problem but mines pretty much stock I usually seem to get around 17-18 mpg
Well... This is just a theory.. But are you sure you're not from 1995? Because 88mph is time warp speed. And you say it does 80mph no probs, which means your entire Jeep is brand spanking new. So you're really from the past.

I own a 95 YJ 2.5L with a 5 speed manual. I never get into 5th gear unless I'm going down hill. I have 35 BFG A/T on it. the 4.11's were not enough to push the big tires so I had 4.88's put in and that did the trick. Definitely get the 5 speed though it will help with the hill climbs and mountain pass's.
