Hi all, been awhile since I have visited. Had to put the completion of my project on hold for a couple years. Back at it this spring, the axle swap for the 4BT beast will be complete.

That being said, my post here is about my daughters 90 YJ. We are looking to swap the manual for an automatic. I have been searching on the forum but have not found anything definitive as to anyone doing this, maybe I missed it?

So... if anyone has some leads/insight as to what all I need to get together and consider for this swap, please.... let me have it!!! :)

Cheers!

Some thoughts for you to consider.

An orignal Jeep auto tranny or a GM conversion auto tranny?

Are you going to convert everything to keep the column shift for the auto? If so you will need a complete steering column and all of the linkages to make that happen. Or use a cable shift mechanism.

Is there an electrical connection from the ECU for the jeep auto tranny?

Do you want an auto tranny brake pedal set up?

If you go with a Jeep tranny such as the TF999, there seems to be a growing problem finding a flex plate that is correct. Some flex plates are very rare and hard to find.

I'm pretty sure driveshaft lengths are different between manuals and autos.

The stock 1990 tf999 doesn't have any electronics... the only electrical connection is for the reverse lights.

If you went w a newer 999 or 32rh you'd need to accommodate the lockup converter.

In my experience, it would be cheaper to sell the jeep and find an auto jeep. The only factory option is the TF999 which is okay but hard to source complete, you can swap in an AW4 like I did but it was useless as a manual shift so you'd be better off converting from a cherokee with engine, trans and all the electronic fuel injection/controls. Or there is the option of putting in a GM auto like the TH350 or 700r4 with adapters. If I was to go back before I blew up my jeep 4.2l, I would have kept my DIY fuel injection but put in a 4l60e also controlled by the GM TBI pcm.

Or there's always the route I went with complete V8 conversion with auto trans......

OK! Wow! Now THAT is what I am looking for. Thanks peeps.

Lots to consider for sure, a couple things mentioned I hadn't considered.

"IF" I go ahead, the plan is to not use an electronically controlled auto. Ideally would be looking for the "cleanest bolt-in" install while using a console type cable shifter.

Will update the thread once I figure out which path I am going to take.

Thanks again for the quick influx of feedback! Cheers!

You can probably get some ideas and knowledge from web sites like Novak conversions or Advance adapters.

Well when I bought my YJ the PO had done this exact swap. Now I want to go from the auto back to the manual lol. PO used an aftermarket auto floor shifter, cable & locked out the clutch pedal.
If you were close I’d swap all my auto swap stuff for your manual stuff. mines an 89 4.2 6cyl.
You would need; auto floor shifter, cable, brackets, auto trans (think an XJ auto would be fine), maybe a different driveshaft (but I could be wrong), flexplate, torque converter, I’m not sure if the T-case is the same?, could be missing something but I think that’s about it you do NOT need a steering column, adapters or pedal assembly, etc.
