Hey guys,

New Jeep owner as of this week.

Looking for thoughts on best Mountain bike carrier.

Looking to fit 2 bikes.

I was not sure if a hitch based system or a spare tire system works better.

I saw the Thule 963PRO Spare Me 2 Bike carrier on https://www.amazon.com/Thule-963PRO-Spare-Bike-Carrier/dp/B009NN6MN4/ref=as_at?imprToken=bYRbb8cxEH3dJD9Fppj.LQ&slotNum=0&creativeASIN=B009NN6MN4&linkCode=w61&imprToken=5n2qU4iIUPY7z60-MGWbig&slotNum=1&tag=mostcrafts-20Amazon, it does look pretty good.

What are you using?

Thanks

I have the hitch mount carrier from Quadratec. It’s very good — no rattles, holds two bikes easily, folded back pretty quickly to allow access to the back. It’s under $200 too. I carry my Pivot on it with a Yakima too tube adapter, works great.

Only downside is clearance — it sticks out a fair way from the hitch and if you’re driving on rough terrain you have to pick your lines a bit more carefully to clear it.

One unexpected benefit is that it also keeps people from tailgating me when it’s folded up. I notice people won’t follow as closely when it’s on, as it looks like a big thing to hit versus the “soft” looking stock rear bumper. Kinda funny to watch people keep their distance.

I wouldn’t get a carrier that goes on the spare because of the weight. Even a high end MTB is going to weigh more than 20 pounds each plus the weight of the carrier. There are numerous forum posts regarding larger tires being too heavy for the OEM hinge and tailgate. I recall seeing posts about bike carriers in the past, try using search. A hitch receiver carrier is probably going to be your best option but you need to make sure it clears the spare, on its own or with an extension.

There are many more and better options with a hitch mount.
Weight is a factor but not a big worry.

Personally I don't like leaving my bike rack on all the time.
With a spare rack like the one on Amazon there, you need to take your spare off to leave the rack at home.
Not hard to do but not easy either.
There are ones that strap down also and I've never trusted them, they always have odd attachment points.
With a hitch mount pull the pin slide it out of the hitch and put the pin back in and done.
Easy peasy

No comments all day so i bought the Thule, 5 mins after both of your comments ha!

I will give it a whirl i bought the mopar one which is the same for 162 from Amazon.

I watched a few videos on it, you can leave just the post sticking out by unscrewing the knob which is how i would leave it when not using it.

I will report back and let you know what i think on it.

Very nice... I have not seen those before... all the swing-outs I had seen previously were top tube mount rather than platform.
I was set on the 1upUSA... very quality rack... but have to remove the bikes to get in the back of the rig.
Thanks for sharing that.

I can open the back door with the 1up (PS Bumper/tire carrier) but, bike(s) need be off the rack.

i own the thule and it's great for two bikes. sometimes it takes some fenaggling to get them both on with weirder frames but it is pretty good. one bad thing is i never could get the lock to work. i'm not a stupid man... but i could never get the cylinder to mount at all. i have a cheapo hitch mount for shuttling multiple people, but my dream hitch mounted carrier is the north shore NSR-6 https://www.northshoreracks.com/racks/nsr-6-bike-rack/. it's the snobby yuppie standard in mountain biking up here. haha.

This thread reminded me to check whether our good old Yakima clears my wife's spare and relocated tag for hauling our "shitty" not-hardcore-enough bikes.
