Building your own enclosure?

I've looked around for enclosed subs that will fit in a jeep and I haven't had a lot of luck. I wan't to keep my rear seats and the only decent sub enclosure that will fit in a jeep i've seen was the mtx thunderfoam combination which unfortunately no one will seem to ship to Canada where I live. So is it very difficult to build your own enclosure? Does anyone know of a thread that has a blueprint for building one? And I don't have much experience with wood working so take that into account and let me know what your suggestions are.

Edit: I have a 2000 TJ if that changes anything

I guess it is really up to how much room you are willing to give up on what solution works best for you. There are many good references on the net on building speaker box and calculators that help with the design. In my case I am building a box to hold a shallow 13 inch sub. As far as the type of box to build I base that on the speaker manufacturing recommendations.

I built a custom enclosure to fit an 8" pioneer slim line in the center console. I have a 250watt amp under the steering wheel. It puts out more bass than I will ever need. Granted, it is firing directly into my seat. I have my sub volume at 8-9/15 normally and if I have the stereo up loud I usually turn it down more b/c its so loud. If you arent trying to impress anyone outside and just want some good sound inside the jeep, I would encourage this route.

The enclosure was a pain to make b/c of the e-brake. You could make a simple box behind your seat for it though.

The main couple of things you have to be careful with in building sub enclosures are simple: internal volume of the box should match the woofer you choose, the box must be airtight. Other than that, the box can be any shape, covered with any paint or fabric and can be anywhere in the Jeep. Through my testing I found that the closer to me, the better I can hear and feel them with the top off.

I saw a thread that showed a 10" sub built into the center console of a TJ, Very cool use of the space and a great location for the sub in a vehicle with the top off.

Someone makes this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/SSV-Works-Wrangler-Subwoofer-Enclosure/dp/B008CQOG86

I also ran across this Facebook page of a guy that built his subs under his seats in his TJ like I did in my JK. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150606958765048.676465.137736240047&type=3

I understand how you feel. I can answer that two ways for you.

1. It is a Jeep, do we really need a lift? It depends on how deep you are into off-roading. It is the same with a subwoofer. It depends on how deep you are into audio entertainment.

2. Good bass and excessive bass are two different things. A good sound system will have good bass. And, you can't get that bass from what are basically midrange speakers. All they do is pop and twang at the low end. A subwoofer will rumble and go thump, and you can feel it.

It's like your home entertainment system. Does it really sound that much better with a subwoofer? My opinion is yes.

Some people think of subwoofers in cars as that Oldsmobile jumping down the street with the car rattling from the bass, and the ground shaking. That is excessive, IMHO.

Some people who have Jeeps, like myself, are audiophiles. So, for us, yes, a subwoofer is needed. Without it, the music sounds really thin. If you drive next to someone who has good bass/subwoofer, you will know the difference. You will hear the fullness of the sound, compared to the thinness without a subwoofer.

Could some one with experience tell me what would work best behind the stock rear seat of a TJ. 2 10 inch subs or 2 12's. Does size matter in such a small space ? I was thinking 2 x Alpine 12 inch type r's . What works for you guys or what would you think is best. I will build my own enclosure.
Thank you

That's entirely too subjective to answer... What do you like as far as subwoofer sound??? Do you like ported or sealed subwoofer enclosures?

My personal preference was a single ported 12"... It was a pain to fit behind the seat but not terrible... If I switched to anything, it would be 2 ported 10"s..

I feel the best configuration for behind the rear seat is down firing. This keeps the cone safe from the tailgate and allows for an efficient use of internal volume.

Thanks. Down firing is what I was thinking. This jeep is kinda a father son driver. He likes Tiesto type stuff while I like classic rock like AC/Dc and the Stones. We both want it loud I realize there is not to much space for a box behind the seat. To answer your question I never had a sub in any of my vehicles over the 30 plus years of driving. So this will be my first.

Yes they are all in the works. I have a weeks holiday booked for the end of June. Going to strip the interior and do the stereo upgrade.
New head unit. Im still not decided what to get
New front speakers. also unsure as of yet.
New sound bar speakers. yet again undecided.
Subs mounted in a box behind the seat.
amps .Im thinking one for the fronts, one for the sound bar and one for the subs.
I find it hard to believe that in 2005 when my Jeep was built they would put a system in it that any car in built the 40's had better

There is a company in Canada that builds all custom enclosures at great prices, it's TC customs, very cool stuff, check them out.
