So about a month ago i threw a rod in my 3.8L motor. Since then its been in the shop in the first attempt to replace the motor. I bought a remanufactured motor from and online seller and had it installed at Tire Pros in stilwater, MN. After about 3 weeks of labor and time wasted waiting for parts to arrive they got it going. Only to find out there was a serious problem with the motor as it had a serious knock. Well when i got that news i decided to just scrap the stock motor send it back and begin planning for a new bigger and stronger heart.

After looking at the price for a Hemi swap i got the idea from a friend to look into the LS swap. Well with the high availability of junk yard motors it would be prefect and relatively cheaper for initial install. After that the mods are endless and also a dime a dozen. SO WHY NOT?

After a little research i came up with the following build plan. I know I've only scratched the surface but here's what i got for now:

Motor: 5.3L LM7 V8 from a 02' Silverado Price: $1000

Tranny: 4L60 Built transmission from a 04 tahoe Price: $1500 / 6L80E Price: $1999

Aftermarket mounts Price: $700

After that there are tons of electronic odds and ends that need to be added or thrown out. I think this will be the hardest part of the build. Getting harnesses to play nice seems like a big challenge.

The turn key kit from MOTECH for the ls swap is priced at $5200. Think i can fab shit to lower the cost and only buy absolute necessities. List of shit includes:

Alternator mount kit, fits your JK alternator to the LS engine.
A/C compressor mount kit, fits your JK A/C compressor to the LS engine.
P/S mount kit, fits your JK P/S pump to the LS engine.
E38 GM computer programmed for your engine.
MoTech's JK to LS wiring harness with power distribution center PDC, supports AFM/DOD and VVT engines.
ECM and PDC mount.
Transmission shift cable mount and lever.
Accelerator pedal and mount.
Aluminum expansion bottle and mount.
A/C line kit.
Air intake kit. (Air Filter not included)
Serpentine belt 6K1015.
Harmonic balancer set, includes new bolt.
Emissions kit - includes fuel tank pressure sensor, EVAP vent solenoid, hose and hardware.

Anyone with any experience in swapping LS motors please let me know if you have any advice. This is going to be a learning experience for me. Thanks guys! :drinks::Thanx:

Haven't posted here in awhile so i guess i should give a status. Saving for a nice apartment and buying jeep parts just doesn't go well. At this point, even piecing together the LS puzzle is a task. On the bright side. Found me a lil something something from a mate in my local Jeep Club...

Haha! Funny you should say this. I'm following the same thread! Tons of good info. I think the hardest part of the swap is wiring all the components to work with the jeep electronics. PAIN IN THE ASS!

Thanks again for the input tho. Much appreciated.

Personally, Me. The hemi makes nice power but it gets worse mileage. If you get the LS 6.2L you get significantly more power than a hemi and better mileage. I don't see the downside. Even if you go with the 5.3 it's not much less power than a hemi but still better mileage

Hmm interesting. I don't think jeep has made a good, reliable and efficient motor yet. The GM LS, vortec line are very good and supported worldwide with an array of aftermarket parts. They produce good power, torque and are efficient at producing that power. Not to mention junkyards are littered with them.

Damn Mooney! Im impressed lol! This only excites me more. i cannot wait till this beast is tucked in to my engine bay. Following installation i will be exploring forced induction options.

Appreciate your input buddy! :awesome:

This happens more then you think. Look on sites like JKO or even Pirate. You look at their builds and say "WTF, wish I had the money for a build like that" Then you look at the details. 07-08 with 2wd and/or blown engine. Prob paid $8000-$10000 for the jeep. Think about what you can do with 20-30k..... Especially if you can fab yourself.'
All said and done ... Most likely paid less then a brand new 4 door loaded Rubi x would have cost.

No doubt there is no replacement for displacement. Torque can be generated by gearing also. Don't get me wrong, I'm with you on this. I already bought my 5.3 but living in the socialist republic of california I must first have a abortion and pay nine years of taxes in advance to have a cleaner, more efficient power plant installed not to mention I have to wait for the redwood trees to mature to harvest for the required paperwork. I must also have proof that I lived with a illegal alien and only vote democrat to get action from the state. I must also pay the unions for their dues lost because I'm doing it my self.

:funnypost: HE MAD!! I just Lol'd at your post! Truth is the truth!

Just make sure you build your motor in that back of a dark garage with no windows. Should be good then ;) As for the abortion, well... ill let you handle that one ;)

Psh, 4k for a lift.. 3k for rims tires and brakes.
2k for winch, front, and rear bumper.
1k for trucklites and LED dog lights. That leaves you with 10k for an engine swap..
That's doing everything on the cheap. Then you still have to address the axles, and what about the tranny? Kinda pointless to make over double the power then leave everything else stock. Unless you were just going to drive it up and down the highway that is.

I love how you included the lights but didn't mention the drive train.....

An LS swap is very common in many arenas these days. A hemi is fine but there is not even close to as much aftermarket support as with LS. Obviously, with unlimited $ a person could put a nuclear reactor in a mail jeep (even in California). This dude wants help, advice and (possibly) opinions regarding an LS swap. I hope your project turns out just the way you want. Looking forward to seeing it do some hard core wheelin. If you are like me, part of the fun is just conquering the mechanical challenges. Good luck!

This is a big part of the project! For me, learning a new trade or something new and useful is more rewarding than having fun with the finished product. I can't wait. Little by little :D

Subscribed.

I've been checking on the hemi swaps, but they're just too much for what you get. LS is interesting and aftermarket is plentiful. I'd have to go from manual to auto for the hemi, but it sounds like there might be stick options for the LS as well.

I look forward to hearing some updates as you progress. :)

Holy smokes! My Jeep's been at MoTech for a few months now but it is finally done! I'm going in the next week to pick it up. I have a bunch of info to post once I get home. Pic's and all. I know it's been a long while but I am almost there. Please bear with me.
