I'm putting on a B&M shift lever. The video is clear. Remove the trim ring....got it. Pull and the knob should come off. Don't got it. [emoji849] I've pulled as hard as a 68 year old can. I can't get any leverage, can't get a good grip. I've tried prying it off. The gear shift lever knob came off with a little effort...but it's off.

This job is supposed to take 15 minutes and it's super easy....if you can get the knobs off.

Any tricks y'all know of?

Watch a few more Youtube videos I find about 2 in 8 will have the correct info.

Then tomorrow morning eat your Wheaties for breakfast and give it another try.

Its hell to get old, aint it! You can remember what you used to do, the body just dont cooperate.

Knock the bottom of it with a hammer if you can swing one up accurate enough. If you're replacing it then you shouldn't care if it gets scuffed up a bit. Maybe hold a wrench under it (with the opening surrounding the shift lever) and hit the wrench with a hammer.

Or get a younger, stronger, neighbor to pull it off.

I've tried the hammer. I've tried a hammer and hitting a pry bar with it. I've tried vise grips. Using a pair of channel lock pliers, I managed to get the fake chrome piece off of the top.

If I were replacing the knob I would have cut it off by now with a Dremel tool and cutting wheel.

Don’t you have to spread the base where you removed the ring? I saw a video that showed there are four splines that have to be spread for easy removal. Hard for me to describe.
I found it!!

I will give you credit for giving me foking hope! [emoji23] I don't know if it's the year of Jeep, or the fact that I have a manual...but mine isn't built like that.

I may have to cut this thing off and buy a new one.

I had my 350 nephew give it a yank and he can't get it off either. I'm going to cut it off.

Yep. i only removed the retainers at the bottom with the screwdriver and pulled, that's it. unless the knob was glued up to the base which they're not from the factory, there is no need to open the base of the knob like the lady is doing in the video as if it was a flower lol. I figure if you broke the base of the knob that you'll need a new knob. i was only taking the center console out so i needed my knobs to be back in place and it's super simple once the retainers pop out, just pull up and youre done.

From my first jeep JKU experience
"Removing the trans shift knob and tcase shift knob was very easy, don't know why there are videos on the net with people using straps to do the job, lol, but i just used a screwdriver to pop the retainers underneath the shift knobs, then pulled them out with both hands, i'll be changing those out later on for something a little more flashy haha.

I've done everything y'all suggested. Thanks for the help....but I'm done with it. I used the ratchet strap. I had high hopes for that, but it was pulling the Jeep down and the transmission up....but nothing happened to the handle. I've pulled with one hand, two hands, twisted left and twisted right....and now I have a pulled muscle in my ribs. [emoji23] I've used vise grips and various pieces of metal and hammers to try and knock it off. Finally, I used a pair of channel lock pliers and pretty much destroyed the knob....but it still won't come off.

So tomorrow I have to buy a cutting wheel for my drill. I'm going to cut it off. Oh yeah.....and I have to buy a freaking $70 Mopar knob to put back on it when I'm done. [emoji849]

And I did get the stick shift knob off easily so I know how it's supposed to be done.

Had a similar problem. Got mine off with a oil filter strap (the rubber kind). Turned the knob left and right about 30 degrees (while pulling up a bit) a couple of times then pulled straight up (by hand) and it came right off. I was never able to get the bottom collars off without damaging the knob (tried a couple of times but it was clear the transfer case knob collar wasnt coming loose with out tearing the material on the knob).

Atta boy! Did it look anything like this? [emoji23] This took about 30 seconds and was shockingly satisfying! Now the only problem is the $70 Mopar knob I ordered to replace it. I'd love to have the B&M version.... but that bad boy was $200! [emoji15]

And for the guy that mentioned glue...there was a white residue inside the knob. I don't truly know what it was, but it looked out of place.

Prior to my having found the YT video on easy removal by the smart lady, I had already switched over to the DV8R tread patterned shift knobs for the simple reason that they are held in place by a simple allen screw allowing for ease of removal. If/when I get rid of mine, I’ll put the OEM knobs that I have that are in excellent condition back on (I’ve already replaced them once for this reason alone).

No. I got a new B&M shift lever for Christmas. To put it on, you have to remove the center console. To do that, you have to remove the knobs of the gear shift lever and the transfer case lever.

I got the gear shift lever knob off easily (just to prove to y'all that I knew how and could. [emoji23]) But the one on the transfer case lever wouldn't come off no matter what I tried.
