JKU Bestop Trail Cover

Looking for a cover that I can put over the truck at night with the soft top installed, but down.

If theres a 20% chance of rain overnight, I don't want to deal with putting the soft top back up, and re-zipping all the windows, to then unzip and put the top back down in the AM before driving to work.

I'd like to be able to throw a cover over the cab for the slight chance it may rain.

I looked at the Bestop Trail Cover, however I see two potential issues:

1) The soft top will be folded down back at the tailgate. Will this top be able to accommodate the bulky top?
2) I have KC-HiLites mounted on the windshield brackets. Will this interfere with the cover?

If the Best Top Trail Cover will not work based on those two items, is there an alternate cover that will work?

Thanks for the help!
Mike

Looking for the same...

Hey MPKehoe09, I'm looking for the same thing. I ordered a Rampage 1107 Cab Cover from Quadratec, nice quality, does not fit over the folded soft top (even though the catalog description says it will). I've seen i mention of one by Rain Gear in an older thread, but the photo on the website looks like a JK without a soft top installed. Anyone got a suggestion (a picture of a cover installed over a folded soft top would be bonus).

Well I have a 2 door, so I am not sure if the 4 door would be different, but I am able to use my soft top folded down, and get perfect fit with my Best top trail cover. It also accommodates my after market Lightforce driving lights, as the windshield is only partially covered by the trail cover. It allows me to get the most use out of my tube doors and soft top folded down as I can all summer.

I have the Bestop Trail cover for my JKU. I do not have a soft top, so I can't help you there, but I can give you my thoughts on this cover.

I chose this particular cover because it was one of the only ones that said it was waterproof as opposed to water resistant like most of the others. However, after having this on during a heavy down pour I still got a small amount of water pooled on my floor mats, so it is not completely waterproof.

I mainly use the cover to cover my Jeep overnight when it's outside. It does a great job of keeping the morning dew out of my Jeep. The downside is that the cover itself is soaking wet from dew in the morning, so you'll want to leave it spread out to dry as opposed to folding it up wet. Speaking of folding it up, forget ever getting it back into the tiny carrying bag that comes with it, not unless of course you're a professional parachute folder.

All in all, if I had to do it over again I would buy a less expensive lighter weight cover that will work just as well in a short rain shower or to keep the dew out of your Jeep. This cover is fine, but if it's going to leak I would rather have spent less money on a water resistant cover. It's far to bulky to carry in my Jeep all the time, so I ended up just getting a $7 tarp and some bungee cords to carry in my tailgate cargo hold for that pop up rain storm.

I have had Trail Covers for my last two Wranglers, 05 TJ and my current JK 09 Rubi. Neither of mine leaked and it fits over the soft top when down. The JK one is heavier and more difficult to toss over the Jeep when putting it on, but I like the tie downs on the door flaps and the tailgate. If it is wet in the morning, I set it out on the picnic table in the back yard. If I think that I might need it at work, I take it with me and put on as soon as I get there so that it will dry out. Getting it back into the sack is easy if you fold it correctly. Just pay attention to how it comes out of the sack the first time. When I got my JK, it was one of the first things I bought. Highly recommend.

This question has come up several recently so I decided to go out and throw my cover on and see what I could do. I have the Bestop cover and am very happy with it so I can't speak for other brands.

To begin with, its pretty apparent to me that it was designed to be used with no top on the vehicle what so ever. I generally use the cover when I have no top on the Jeep. I don't own a hard tom and I have quick disconnects on my soft top so if I plan on having it down for an extended period of time, I just remove it from the vehicle completely. With the top gone, the cover fits like a glove.

With the soft top retracted, well that's another matter.

I know from experience that if I retract the top and have the arms laying parallel to the tub, the top sticks out a bit and you can't secure the cover in the rear. I tried something new this time to see if it helps and not sure if it really did. I left the bars at an angle and though it moved the top forward a little, it wasn't enough to really matter.

With lots of fondling and massaging of the cover, I was able to get it to secure in the rear but it was extremely tight.

Securing the top in the rear brought the entire top slightly to the rear so there was quite a gap in the front by the door, Now, this gap is always there to some extent but it was much larger when secured in the rear. If you have your doors on this won't be a problem but it could let blowing rain in when the doors are off.

I went back to the way I usually install the cover when my top is installed and retracted. I pulled the entire top into place on the main part of the Jeep and yes, there is a gap in the rear where the top is. Even though I've pretty much water proofed my jeep's interior (bed lining, etc) I still would rather keep the cabin dry. I figure that the only portion that will get wet in the rear is the soft top itself and maybe a little into the trunk area so its okay.

Oh, and this will fit with lights on the A-pillar. I currently have Ridged Duallys but I had KC lights mounted there a while back and there is no problem at all.

Anyone have an update to this? I'd like a trail cover for my JKU, but need one that will fit correctly with the soft top folded down, but still mounted to the Jeep.
