Opinions on Smittybilt Scout trailer?

Does anybody have anything bad to say about Smittybilt Scout trailers?
They seem very reasonably priced compared to others, but is there a reason I should stop contemplating buying one?

While I like all the drawings and the layout, my primary concern is build quality. Will it feel like a flimsy metal file cabinet on wheels?

Appreciate any input, good or bad.

By the way, what happened to their Recon trailer? I remember seeing advertisements and some prototype info, but then it all disappeared.

EDIT: every time I submit a thread, it randomly inserts empty lines between paragraphs. How to avoid this annoyance?

I understand that many people don't like Smittybilt overall, but I would really appreciate comments like "I have/saw this trailer and this is what I did/didn't like" or maybe something like "I/friend had this trailer and it fell apart when I/he was on a trail and hit a pothole/shelf".

I'm hoping to see something beyond "Smittybilt is bad/cheap". I personally feel that a lot of other small trailers are overpriced, reaching a price of a brand new Jeep.

I'd also be interested in hearing real ownership opinions on it. But this thread will probably be littered with comments from haters and people who've never owned it...

I saw one last year on display at 4WP and it looked pretty sweet for the price..

Sorry, no direct knowledge but found a long thread about the trailer:
https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/smittybilt-scout-trailer-reviews.174189/
I have been reading that thread today, and according to some posts, the Scout went through a few production updates. The latest being reinforced tongue and galvanized frame.

Weight distribution seems to be the main concern, so their advice is to mind it when loading the trailer. I have yet to find a person to say this trailer failed in some way.

I was thinking about one, but then decided to pass.

The biggest drawback for me is that this thing is stupid heavy for what it is.
Empty weight >1500 lbs is way too much for basically a metal box.

Also, folks on Expedition Portal reported that tongue weight is also unreasonably high (to the point that most guys struggled to lift the tongue from the ground).

These two issues alone is a deal breaker for me - I want a trailer that I can unhitch and roll around if necessary

Isn't in made in China? When I was researching adventure trailers, the best deal going at the time (a couple years ago) was Ruger trailers and outfit it yourself.

For about the same money I would have spent, I figured out I don't actually plan to take my camp set up offroad. I camp at the off-road park or trailhead and go from there. So a small travel trailer with bathroom was what I went with.

I got to check one out at Overland Expo, it wasn't a bad setup at all. If we didn't want to be enclosed and insulated for all weather capability, I might have bought one.

I'm not through that thread on ExpeditionPortal yet, but so far it seems it has 2 issues (not sure how important they are): weight and tongue weight (weight distribution). At least one person relocated the spare to the back, but it involves fabricating a bumper with a swingout carrier.

I wonder how much a Jeep will be struggling towing it.

I know no posts in quite awhile, I did recently get what I think is a good price on a used one near me. I’m pretty impressed with the build.. to sons concerns, it is sort of tongue, heavy, I am planning on buying a third-party rear bumper tire carrier option, which isn’t bad priced to put the spare tire back there which would alleviate about 200 pounds of that. The tent is an awesome shape for its age no issues and some of the bills I’ve seen through YouTube really are impressive with this unit, it also offers many features there are seen on high-end units, such as the independent suspension

Great to hear. What is a "good price" for a used one, if you don't mind us asking?

Thanks!
