They said they have a new redesigned thread compud long lasting, makes me wonder about how long lasting that new compound will be. Not sure how old or new these tires are, maybe they've been out for a year i've havent looked at them yet ? or maybe they brand new :). I've had the Patagonias MT in my truck and i hated the tire because in my case they wore down extremelly quick. The MT02's are below $300in the size i run 315/70/17 so sounds tempting considering the Toyo MT and Nitto MT'sand BFG MT are all literally in the $400 range and it's been 2 years since i have KO2's and my eyes are itchiy for new tires lol. Can't help myself damn it.

I was aware of the MT-02 about 6 months ago, shortly after I purchased 5 of the original version. Lol

I also saw them 6 mos or so ago. I'm interested in the compound change but likely wouldnt buy a set. We have lots of red clay here and the original patagonia MTs were terrible in that muddy clay. I actually liked them on the road but off road, I'd take my Wildpeak AT3Ws for the trails I have around me. Wildpeak MT's and Kanati Mud Hogs are both significantly better than the patagonia MT in the mud.

They look interesting and the price is really tempting. However I cant bring myself to not run a tire that doesn't have the 3 peak mountain snowflake. Also the lack of long term reviews will keep me away for now.

Well for the last 6 months I have tried repeatedly to find a set of these with no luck. Even emailed Milestar twice via their website. Crickets.

So screw it, I bought the Falken R/T instead.

One thing to remember when buying Patagonia's MT is you need to run more air pressure in them on the road. The tire is domed and it's design needs to run on the center tread blocks. I run mine 33 PSI cold which puts them at 36 psi hot, I have about 15,000 on the now and they are wearing good but I figure I will only get about 30,000 out of them. But they have been by far to quietest MT tire I have ever owned.

Every set myself or my cousin have run we've meticulously kept the air pressure where the entire face of the tread is hitting the road evenly like any other tire. He got 40,000 miles out of his on a 7,500 lb. diesel pickup. The last set I had myself, being on a Jeep, were wearing even better but I ended up selling that Jeep. For the price I think they get great tread life. But then again I didn't air them up too high. I mean you have to figure that if you purposefully make them run on the center of the tread face only, then that part will wear faster and eventually the outer blocks will be ridden upon anyhow. Might as well make all the tread wear evenly.

I am still on multiple sets of the original Patagonia's... I never had any wear issues, not fast not cupped, not feathered... They've been good to me. My LJ doesn't get enough miles to even be in the discussion, but the JKU has nearly 30k on it and still a ways to go. This was a little while back at about 24k and at 11/32's.... Beautiful wear straight across!

There doesn't seem to be much info available on the difference between the original and the MT02...

There are quite a few changes between the MT01 and the MT02.

The three big changes:
  • Carcass
    • Better quality fibers.
    • Changed the angle of the plies and how they lay.
  • Extra material under the tread area
    • Gives the tread blocks more stability.
  • New compound
    • More silica - Helps cold and wet weather performance
    • That was all they could really tell me about the compound. The rest is formulation changes and that's like the Coca-Cola secret recipe.
Cosmetically, there few changes. Mostly to sidewall patterns and not in all the sizes.

The benefits noticed during testing:
  • Better performance at a higher pressure. Testers were finding that if they were running 8psi on a certain trail, they could get the same performance or better at 10-12psi.
  • Better tread performance on road in cold and wet conditions.
  • Longer rotation intervals. Instead of 2500 to 3000 mile rotations, they're now seeing 4-7K miles rotations (depending on application).
Milestar says these changes are evolutionary, after seeing how their tires perform and talking with the people out there running them.

And as mentioned before, select Milestar tires are buy 4 get one FREE:

I've heard more stories about patagonia (1 and 2) sidewall failure than any other tire in recent history. Nate @ Dirt Lifestyle refuses to run them and backed out of his sponsorship after multiple failures. Rudy from MORR just had a failure at King of Hammers. Our local groups have had their share of failures in the exact same way.

IMO, you're already spending so much.. just spend a little bit more and get something with a good reputation.

I’ve never seen a tire with more sidewall failures. Almost every YouTuber who has run them has had sidewall punctures and catastrophic failures. I dont mean to be harsh but I don’t think it’s a coincidence. I’m not saying people don’t have good experiences with them but I just wouldn’t put my trust in them when I’m far away from home off grid

Tearing up sidewalls has to do with the terrain your using the tire. I don't care what tire you use if your in the sharp rocks you are going to tear them up. If your going to play in the rocks you are going to be replacing tires.

A couple of years ago I ran Mouse Trap, only a few miles from my house. I tore up 3 of my Mickey Thompson MTZ. Luckily no flat but the tires where trash.

If it was only due to the terrain, everyone would have the same failure rate. Instead, everyone who goes to the same rocky area is seeing a higher rate of failure with the Patagonia tires so clearly it's not 100% due to the terrain.

I don't really have any care one way or the other, but I would be extremely surprised if the "black label" Patagonias had a different carcass/sidewall construction over normal ones, just a softer, stickier tread compound. Remember these are a "bargain" tire so it's unlikely they would redesign it. So the argument that the black label tire would be more fragile is kind of a moot point.

Black label tires (any brand) will not pass DOT requirements for street use. What the reason for this is is unknown and there are many reason why they would not pass. But I doubt very much it has anything to do with softer tread compound. My autocross tires for my Vette where the softest tread compound of any tire I have every owned and they where street legal.

Well i just ordered 4 Pat MT02's today that'll run in the Jeep. Same size as my current KO2's in 315/70/17. The KO2's are E while the MT02's are D.
I have an MT01 in my truck designated as a spare, It's got 13/32's so it'll be do fine as a spare in the Jeep. I'll move my current KO2's to my truck as they have 10/32 left so plenty of meat left there, and the K02's in my truck are at 4/32 so the move comes handy just cause i was itched out to replace my Jeep tires after 2 years. I go from MT to AT and back every couple of years and the truck really needs another set of tires so win-win.

Hoping i won't be dissapointed by the new MT02's. Like i said in my OP I was extremelly dissapointed by the original MT's in my truck in the wear department. I sold them with only 12k miles and 13/32 left in them. (kept the best looking one as a spare). They were replaced by KO2's at the time.
I've been watching youtube videos and reading about the MT02 improvements on the wear side so for the price i said what that heck lets try them... I got them for $247 a pop, again trully hoping they won't suck as i wanted to try the Baja Boss MT but damn they're $420 each and the Copper STT pro best price was $378. all in the same 315/70/17 size. I should get them in my garage by Tuesday, maybe even quicker will see.

I’ll post measurements of my KO2’s next just cause it’s fun to compare. I’ll do it from the top of the tire and also from the the edge lip which is what I measure to dial the tire size in the tcm to adjust speedo. Then match with gps.

Will also post same tire measurements once I get the MT02s installed.

4th MT02 showed up today so now i have all 4 . I'll try to schedule install by Friday after work or Saturday.
In the meantime i took measurements of the MT02's 315/70/17 UNMOUNTED
34.5" until the top of the tire

34" until the shoulder edge

Once i get them mounted will see how much the weight of the Jeep will push them down.

This the Pat MT02's mounted at 37PSI. I drove her like that for about 20 miles, didn't really notice the extra air as i didn't know i had that much :) I just lowered that down to 33psi just know. doubt 3 psi will make any difference in the measurements so here you go

34" from the top of the tire, so the height in this instance is about 1/2" difference.

From another thread back in 2022. This was the Pat MT I had as a spare in my truck, the one i just moved to my Jeep Spare as of yesterday, and that KO2 was one of them one i had in my Jeep now they're in the truck :) The Pat was at 13/32 in this picture compared to this KO2 that was at 14/32 , both on 17x9 wheels. Both are 315/70/17., the Patagonia only had 6k miles, the KO2 had 5k miles. This is why i hated the Pat MT's. They wore down 1/32 every 1k miles in my truck.

I'll check the Patagonia MT02 thread again at 1k miles, 3k miles and 5k miles
This is the Pat MT02 brand new, 19/32, same as the original Pat MT's
