Removing grille inserts on 2016 Sahara JK

I've decided I don't like the chromy-style inserts that border each of the 7 holes. I think they are only stock on Saharas and a few other other models. I have swapped out the shiny Jeep badge for a black one. I want to either leave the 7 holes bare, and/or possibly install black mesh behind the grille.

I am hoping the inserts can be removed without damaging the Mojave Sand paint on the grille.

Several months ago I think I saw some mention of this on this forum, but I can't find it now.

Appreciate any suggestions.

I kept mine, but put Drake inserts into my 2016 JKU last year. I think they look pretty good, and I like the added protection from road debris. I haven't noticed any overheating issues (tested empirically after a 2600 mile road trip last year that included a back and forth through the Rockies).

Maybe it's not the look you want, but I'd personally be hesitant to remove the stock ones entirely.

beermati: Thanks for the link. Looks helpful. But, if I just remove the inserts, wouldn't the seven holes look just like other models without inserts, or do they look incomplete without the inserts? I would have slightly bigger openings for slightly more airflow, so, if I install wire mesh, I would be even less likely to diminish airflow and will avoid overheating.

locomotive: Yes, I want mesh for further protection from debris, but first I want to address the inserts (black or gone) and headlight inserts (black).
