I kept mine, but put Drake inserts into my 2016 JKU last year. I think they look pretty good, and I like the added protection from road debris. I haven't noticed any overheating issues (tested empirically after a 2600 mile road trip last year that included a back and forth through the Rockies).

Maybe it's not the look you want, but I'd personally be hesitant to remove the stock ones entirely.

We painted the silver slot and headlight trim black - much better!! I'm still looking for a mesh backing that will fit Sahara grill. You can't just remove the slot trim pieces, you will see what I mean when you remove them. Here's the guide we used to remove it all:

beermati: Thanks for the link. Looks helpful. But, if I just remove the inserts, wouldn't the seven holes look just like other models without inserts, or do they look incomplete without the inserts? I would have slightly bigger openings for slightly more airflow, so, if I install wire mesh, I would be even less likely to diminish airflow and will avoid overheating.

locomotive: Yes, I want mesh for further protection from debris, but first I want to address the inserts (black or gone) and headlight inserts (black).

 

@fastdude, correct, they are very unfinished. Like you, I originally thought we could just remove and have grill without inserts, but after removing saw no way that would work. Sorry, I don't have a photo handy.
