Suggested vendors for a replacement 4.0L engine

Hello All

1993 YJ 4.0L automatic

The engine has 170k miles on it and the compression in a couple cylinders is horrible. My intent is to purchase a replacement engine and then rebuild the existing engine as a project. There are a surprising number of vendors selling 4.0L engines, and I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations on who provides a good product with good service.

Mass produced rebuilds are hit and miss. You are best off going to a reputable local engine builder if you dont want to take chances.

Never ever buy a rebuilt engine! (NEVER) Rebuilt engines, are exactly that, (Rebuilt) meaning they only replace what is broken and reuse all the original parts. Now a remanufactured engine is a totally rebuilt using all new parts, nothing old is used except the block. That is why remanufactured engines usually cost more than rebuilt engines, cause you are getting a new motor with a guaranty that it will last. As agalloch07 said - Mass produced rebuilds are hit and miss. Cause you are getting someone else's problems with a few new parts thrown in. That is why you (Never Ever) buy a rebuilt engine, buy something that is guarantied to work for the first 100,000 miles or for the first year, or something very close to that. Then when anything goes wrong, (it don't cost you anything.) Unlike what you get when buying rebuilt engines.

I will throw this up here real quick, then I have to go. This site shows remanufactured engines, and they give you a five year warranty on their engines, but like I said, rebuilt, and remanufactured engines are totally different in both price and warranty. jeep engine 4.0 L6,242,87-90 I'll check back with you later!

Jim, unfortunately there are fewer and fewer shops out there that are owned by people who are actually good at rebuilding an engine properly. "IF" you can find one locally that is your best bet instead of buying another one. If there is a local car club like a Vette club or better yet a antique club they can be a great source for you.

I have no idea i just know ATK engines have a LOT of horror stories i would not trust them to rebuild a 5hp Briggs and Stratton.

I went to my local engine rebuilder that i have herd nothing but good things about and hes been in business for a long time. I was asking questions about building a 4.0 stroker engine for me. I was going to just bring him the bare block and all the parts. He said he would prefer to tear the engine down himself to inspect it for any signs of damage from heat and other things. This guy is a total pro and is very tedious and his prices were reasonable. Unfortunately the prices for stoker parts and fuel injection was not so i abandoned the idea of a 4.0 stroker.

That's a 4.7 Stroker. Now Golen makes a 4.6 Stroker I been dreaming of getting, puts out 270Hp. High-Performance Jeep Crate Engines | Golen Engines
I was going to go with Bishop Buehl stroker kit they put out a little over 300hp. They are quite a bit more involved than a simple Golen stroker. They port the factory head and run huge Chevy valves and cut the valve spring seats to run chevy high lift springs so you can use a much larger cam. They also use massive forged connecting rods and custom built pistons. They dont sell complete engines though because they are more of a race engine shop they dont do production mail order engine builds.

At the time the crank, rods, pistons, head work was a little over $3000 if i remember right but the machine work and after market fuel injection it would have end up costing about $8,000.

I absolutely love the 4.0 engine and i have a massive disdain for GM. But i have to admit you get a lot more engine in a lighter package for a lot less money with a 5.3 LS engine swap. So i will either keep the stock 4.0 or eventually LS swap it because strokers just dont make any financial sense.

I'll add that I am the Ford crazy guy! Novak says it perfectly - Ford V8's are smart swaps, especially if using a Ford manual transmission or the Jeep AX15 transmission. When considering an automatic, the GM lineup does provide greater options. Fuel injected Ford V8's are especially exciting for a Jeep engine swap. A 5.0L in their various tunes will offer great performance and a 351 EFI even more so. Ford engines are light, narrow and have the distributor favorably located. These engines are a bit longer than Chevy V8's, but they can nest deeper into the firewall area to compensate for this, leaving adequate room for cooling components. Ya, but I love those Boss motors, but as a Ford guy, I owned a few 351 Windsor engines, I could never hurt them during my mod boggen days!

Try contacting Jasper Engines, 1 800 827 7455, have your VIN and they will be able to give you a price on a remanufactured engine with a 3 year 50,000 mile warranty, they might even be able to recommend a shop that is local to you for installation. I'm a professional Mechanic, been turning wrenches since 1984, I have had good luck with Jasper Products, I enen toured their factory about 25 years ago, very impressive. Just make sure to retorque all the oil pan and valve cover bolts before installation.

most all shop here in town here as well use Jasper. I would say they would not if it was an issue. No mechanic wants issues, cost time and money.

I have been around sometime and bought crates and had stuff custom built as well. You know in the end i had more issues with shops then with big name Remans. By far.

Time is the other issue for a shop. Used to be not more then a election ago. you could have near anything dropped shipped in a few days. Where a custom build can take a lot of time.

I looked into Jasper engines when i thought i might need a new Toyota 3rz for my taco. Reviews on Jasper engines rebuilds around the toyota forums were not good at all. They had worse reviews than ATK on jeep forums. I read horror stories about shops getting so many bad rebuilds that they stopped using Jasper all together.

I thought the block might need decked for a new head gasket. But after speaking to a highly recommended toyota engine rebuilder i found out it was within spec. So i ended up doing a backyard bubba head job by lapping the valves and the engine still runs great a year later.

If you order a Jasper (or any brand) check the terms of the warranty. Some rebuilders give a much longer warranty if "their" shop does the install.
