What is "high mileage" for a 4.0L TL?

The dealer wasnt able to deliver on the numbers I was promised to get me fully infected with Jeep fever again.
And if Im going to buy a used Jeep and deal with issues, I want one that provides a more classic jeep experience with the windshield down and the doors off (no A pillars).
I had a YJ from 1988 - 1996. It was never reliable so I cant use it as a guide but by 130k it was done.
What type of mileage is reasonable before a TL needs a rebuild?
I understand that usage will make a difference and individual mileage may vary.

No clue, they haven't invented tl's yet...

I have 280,000 on a 94 4.0 yj and 210,000 on an 04 4.0 tj and they are both still VERY reliable...

I have a 92 2.5l with 180k and it is very reliable. The only difference in the 4.0 is two more cylinders.

Perhaps you had issues with a yj that was pre fuel injection.

If you are asking about the reliability of a TJ maybe ask in the TJ thread to get more help.

I think a lot of what makes for longevity is proper and regular maintenance.
Deferred maintenance is probably the grim reaper of automobiles.
Vehicles get old, people don't want to put money into maintaining an old car and finally it dies.
My 4.2 has 190K miles and it still runs well. I had some issues early in my ownership, but they were due to the PO not maintaining it.
A couple Seafoam treatments, a timing chain and seals & gaskets made a huge difference.
I bought a motor to rebuild, but the current one runs well enough that I put the rebuild on the back burner and am working on other things.

Good Luck, L.M.

I dunno, I've been beating the absolute heck out of my 94 for the last 12 years and 100,000 miles and have neglected oil changes and even let it get low on oil a few times.... can't seem to kill it....

I'll get flamed for this by the TJ guys, but I dont care. I hated my 98 TJ. I hated the junk hood hold downs that keep breaking, the gauges constantly not working, the death wobble...you get my point. YJ, TJ...same engine save the later years 4.0 with the 0331 head issue. Same T case, same trans possibly. So what makes you think a TJ is more durable than a YJ? Whatever killed your YJ with 130K miles will do the same with a TJ. With the exception of the suspension, same parts, different box. 200K is not a lot for a 4.0 if taken care of, same with the AW or AX trans and T cases. But like you said, depends on how you use it and maintain it.

TJ's had a slightly better t-case, true neutral shift sector and 4 pinion planetaries instead of 3 like all YJ's used.

Both the TJ and the YJ used a bottom of the barrel transmission for a few years BA10/NSG370

This is NOT the tj (lj) section but...

My 210,000 mile 04 tj would easily pass for 20k miles... It's in great shape in every way...

True, but you get my point. Not enough significant differences to make or break things. I could never grasp of all things, Peugeot parts in a Jeep and now Fiat/Jeep is joining with Peugeot once again. Guess that's just today's world, I'll pass on a new one.

You think you had problems with your YJ... Talk to the JK crowd...

One of the clubs I belong to is made up of mostly JK owners, they are constantly complaining about the electrical and sensor problems that shut them down on the road, while my TJ and YJ just keep going.

I abused my 1994 Jeep offroading. My brother once drove it and didn't notice a huge oil leak. I don't know how long he drove it without oil. He called me saying there was a knock on the engine. Lol. I sold it with 285K miles and still pulled like a mule. I had a 2003 I bought with 45K miles. I totaled it with 280K miles. Still strong. I didn't abuse the 2003 as much as I did my '94. Both Jeeps had the 4.0 I6.

OP - if you talk to Jeep, there is no real LJ, it is the community that tagged the TJ Unlimited with that. The only difference between the TJ and LJ (2004-6 model years only) are the wheel base and the items affected by that. Same engine and transmission as the TJs of the same year with the exception that there were no manual transmission '04 LJs, only autos.

StephenCBrinson - there were no '96 Jeep Wranglers. The production of YJs ended with the '95 model year produced late into 1995. The first TJs were model year '97 and production started in early 1996.

Wow! That is a lot of street cred for the TJ, Im satisfied.
Ill definitely skip the JL and get a TJU as soon as I have time for a project. Im thinking next fall after I finish my kitchen remodel and floors. Until then Ill lurk and try to learn what I can so I end up with a reliable Jeep this time.
Thanks

Welcome to the Forum @CNNCNN

You can still buy a brand new AX15. Check out Advance Adapters.

Good Luck, L.M.

Welcome to the forum.

Moving your thread to TJ from YJ general. you'll confuse us YJ guys with all the High Tech in your TJ. But depending on the shop, you can still get a new ax-15 probably cheaper than a shop rebuild cost.

I have 73k on my TJ. Loaned it out for 13 years and 17,000 miles…came back me to like I left her.
i don’t think my JK would fair as well after 20 years.
i haven’t driven my JK since we started dating again.
I probably wouldn't have bought it back with over 150k on it.
