I've had the same problem ever since I purchased my 2013 JK last year. I took it to the dealership and they found the TCC solenoid had failed, so they replaced that but still stalls on cold start. Does anyone know if the actual torque converter has to be replaced as well? Thanks.

I recently purchased a 2013 JK with 106K miles on it which seems to be having the same issue of stalling when put into reverse on a cold start (first of the day). I dropped it off at my local dealer on 1/6. I explained in great detail what has been happening, offered up my video of the issue which they declined to see and mentioned this thread. They ran some diagnostics and told me they don't see any issue. I explained to them again in detail what I'm experiencing. They kept it over night to see if they can reproduce the issue and possibly capture some diagnostic data. Still waiting to hear back.

So.... a year of having this problem with my 2016 JKU Sahara. Stalls in reverse. I’ve read this thread and many others. Even see the complaints on the NHTSA website. Some people get their torque converters and TCC solenoids replaces and it’s fixed. Other people are just being told random things. Here is what I’ve been told and where I currently am:

1) We see this a lot. You’ve put bad gas in it and there is too much ethanol and that causes it. Use better gas. (I don’t go to this dealer anymore).

2) The throttle body is dirty and you need to replace your air filter. Well do that for $300. (I cleaned it myself and swapped the filter for under $30).

3) We can’t replicate it, are you sure it’s stalling or does it just feel like it is? (The service center manager walked time my Jeep. I started it, put it into reverse and it died. Restarted it and it died again. Restarted it and it just bogged out to near death and fired back up at the last second with a really rough idle). Oh, yup, there’s a problem.

I’m not at the dealership again, FCA case manager involved, the techs have never heard of this issue and are dumbfounded.

What I have found

The NAG1 transmission manual (google it and you’ll find it) says, “stalls in R or D... check torque converter and torque converter control solenoid and replace.”

Sounds easy enough right? That’s written in a Chrysler manual but the techs have never heard of this problem. I work on a lot of cars and I know enough to know when I don’t know something I should google it and see what other people have experienced. Usually I can find something that points me in the right direction because I know I’m never the first to have the problem.

What do I do now? I’d like my new fixed, it’s under warranty. I don’t want to pay for the repair then attempt to get reimbursed because I know that won’t happen easily.

What I think, and I’m generally opposed is, who knows an attorney? Maybe it’s time we start collecting names of people with this problem that hasn’t been resolved under warranty and start a class action lawsuit? This seems too common for it to be a unique fault and spans multiple years. It’s a poor design or subpar part manufacturer making the solenoids/torque converters.

Anyone think that would get FCA’s interest to take the issue seriously and figure out what the issue is? I wonder if the JL 3.6L will have the same problem in a few thousand more miles. Or maybe the 2l turbos? I think they all have the same transmission or at least similar?

Just food for thought. And, if someone tells me how to add a video, I’ll send mine of the stall, restart, rough idle condition.

To post a video you need to place it somewhere on the internet and add a public link to it. I have a Google account and posted my videos to the Google Drive section and shared the link.

Disappointing to hear your experience. I have not had a replication of the stall issue since I last posted and it’s like playing roulette when I start it in the morning.

I replaced the filters myself and use medium or better grade gas and every 5-6k an stp fuel cleaner bottle in the tank.

Best

Thanks for the tip in the video. I’m on the road right now, but will get one up.

Good news, dealer is putting a flight recorder in and recording it soon can drive it and record what happens when it stalls.

I will continue to post everything I find out from the dealer in hopes it saves someone else from the grief.

After 4 days at the dealership, unable to reproduce the issue, I decided to just pick it up and take it someplace else. The mechanic walked out with me to see if it would stall out on me. Guess what, it stalled out when put in reverse. Mechanic ran back inside to get his diagnostics tool only to discover that the only codes displayed where, antenna radio connection, driver seat heater, passenger seat heater and a TPSM code. The new plan of action is to connect it to a flight recorder, hope it happens again and then send that data off to Chrysler for analysis. We shall see what happens next.

As mentioned to your fellow forum members, please keep us updated on your dealer visit. If additional support is needed, feel free to send us a PM.

The dealership has completed their assessment. The conclusion, replace the crankcase position sensor and see what happens. If it still acts up then flush the transmission and replace transmission filter. If it still acts up replace the torque convert and torque converter solenoid. They won't replace the parts under the extended warranty because there are no codes to justify the parts getting replaced. I'm going to pick it up and look at seeking assistance from a transmission specialty shop.

Sounds like you have been through a lot with your problem if you have a warranty that can be used anywhere the transmission shop would be best. I did look at what another poster showed about the nags manual http://www.lx.abodiesonline.com/Manuals/NAG1%20Manual.pdf

The first link that shows Service Information And it shows the problem on page 21-528 about half way down the page of stalling when put into R or D and it shows the test and both lower column step 2 show replace torque convertor

Thank you for the link it will be helpful when I take to the transmission shop.

2016 Jeep Wrangler

I guess another 2016 can be added. I just joined while researching the "dies in reverse" issue. I have an 2016 jeep wrangler with 51,000 miles.
I keep finding this issue online with multiple years and multiple causes. Not very reassuring. I took it to the dealer and they could not replicate this issue. They told me unless they could replicate this issue that they could not help me. For the past 3 days in a row since getting my jeep back from the dealer is has almost died all three morning when I first started the jeep and put it into reverse.

I realize this is an annoying issue but has anyone tried putting the tranny into Drive first and seeing if it stalls and then if it hasn't stalled shifted into reverse and see what happens then ?

.
I have tried that. The results were inconsistent, sometimes it would stall and other times it would shudder and keep running. It seems to stall more times than not though.

I’m not an expert, far from it. My assumption is the gearing. The forward gear is different than the reverse gear. I’m forward motion it is assumed you’ll shift up as you need more speed. Reverse, it takes more power because it’s closer to starting movement in second gear. Just my two cents anyways. Hence, the stall.

Also, I have a flight recorder in mine for a week. It is recording everything with the transmission. As I get more diagnostic information, I will share. Also, once a final determination is made, I will post it. And, I will give out dealer information to anyone who asks once my problem is resolved. Hopefully, one dealer may call another and take their experience on the matter rather than disregarding anecdotal evidence from an Internet forum.

Hi everyone.
For the past three winters (yep, 3 years) my 2013 Jeep Wrangler has died when put in reverse on the first start of the day. It only does this on days/nights that seem to get below 40 ish degrees. It only does it initial start of the day. A few times it’s done it when put in drive too - but reverse has been the main problem. No other symptoms. Normally once I put it back in park, then re start and put it in reverse the second time it will go. Sometimes it stalls but normally does the second try. I took it to local mechanics two or three times each winter season and no one could find the issue. It’s almost like they didn’t believe me. So they’d keep it for days to try to replicate it themselves - go figure I’d leave it with them for two days and it wouldn’t do it. I showed them videos as some others on this thread did too. Mechanics had me do multiple software updates, essentially wash my entire engine (??? I’m very not mechanically minded lol) and also a transmission flush. I have 3k miles left of my 100k extended warranty so I went to a Jeep dealership and flat out said - LOOK AT MY TORQUE CONVERTER after seeing some of these threads. Sure enough, this morning they called and said I not only need my torque converter replaced, but so much damage to seals has been done that I need a NEW TRANSMISSION. Thankfully for me it’s looking like it’s fully covered since I purchased that extended warranty (purchased my Jeep used). Anyway, it looks like this is a widespread issue with Wranglers - I feel relieved it wasn’t sometime specific I must have done but this has been a very frustrating experience.
