Just curious how much I should expect to pay for a regear for one axle.

When I had mine done (JKURR so D44s w/F&R lockers), I supplied all of the parts and just paid labor. I used Yukon master kit and Royal Purple gear oil so about $450-$500 in parts and supplies. Labor was about $500. I would expect there to possibly be some difference in cost doing front vs rear.

Overall, I had the front and rear done, added RCV front axle shafts, Terraflex HD ball joints, new outer seals all around, and transfer case and trans fluid changed. Total labor was $1,400.

I paid $1200 OTD for both diffs back in July last year. My shop included parts and labor so i didn't have to worry about getting anything. Look directly for drivetrain shops that do gears for a living to avoid 3rd party installer pricing. Most "Jeep" shops for example here in Socal will sub-contract the dudes doing the gears or locker installs so you will end up up paying a lot more because they have to pay the installers while you pay the shop.

That’s exactly what I was thinking but I wasn’t sure if they actually did that. I have a local Jeep shop that almost certainly does this.

around 700 each end was my last going rate. I have done gears on D44, D60 and 14B. I just don't have the time or patience required so for me it's just pay the piper!

Just be aware that prices have gone up a bunch. You can't get a master rebuild kit for anything less than about $700 today. Half that price for just one axle.

I was just quoted at 1350 for one axle. Is that fair? That seems like a huge price for just one axle. I can get a ring and pinion and master install kit for $370, that means they want around 1,000 dollars for labor.

These dudes are charging $1450 right now, July 2022 here in Socal so if i had to do it again it's $250 more expensive than last year. i think normally they're charging 1550 or 1600 right now. So $800 per axel tops. I had me gears done by another shop so i'm just too lazy to call to ask how much they're charging this year for gears. but by the looks of it my rear locker install just went up in price if i wanted to do it now.. God damn it. :)

1450 for both axles? I’m also in california. 1350 just seems so excessive for one axle. I might try to find someplace in Nevada. I just don’t know if it’s a wise idea to drive 3 hours to Nevada when I know my pinion bearings are messed up

These are the dudes that did my gears last year, and are going to do my rear locker once i decided to go for it
They quoted me $1600 for Eaton locker a few months ago that is everything parts and install, only thing i'll have to do is run the electrical wiring from the locker to the switch, they'll drill the diff and leave the connection ready to go so all you have to do is hook your wires to the eaton little pin and call it a day. They did my gears and locker/truetrac in my first Jeep about 5 years ago. My gears back then were $1000 :) they used to do the gears for Rebel offroad and other Jeep shops here in Socal. I took my Jeep to their shop in Riverside at 9:00am appointment and i was driving the Jeep same morning and doing the break-in at 11:00am. i think 2 years warranty if i remember correctly, and you don't have to pay extra to get the rear re-checked after the 500 miles break-in. But call and check.

I know the economy is trash, but that’s just insane prices. You could almost get a fully assembly new axle for 4200, hell I did get a fully built ultimate Dana 44 for 3400 a few months ago, which came with gears and a locker and chromoly shafts already installed and ready to go. I just need to get a matching set of gears in my damned rear axle. And I find it bogus to spend 1/3 the price of my new axle for a regear on one axle.

You could buy the tools to set backlash, gear pattern, etc. and do it yourself. I know this sounds harsh but you can either shop around to see is anyone will do it for less, accept the price quoted or DIY it.

Setting up gears is not something for just anyone to do if you want it done right. I get it. it's expensive but parts have gone up a lot, parts pricing reflects the difficulty to get them and the increase costs in shipping. Plus either shops are insanely busy due to demand or lack of help.

More reasons to hate living here in california I suppose? That’s a fair deal you got, no fair deals where I live, we’re all just trying to survive this economy I guess.
