The light bars are, and have been, illegal for on road use in many areas. Off-road is fine. Here in Florida, you are basically only allowed 6 lights forward: 2 headlight, 2 amber, and 2 fog/driving. The lights themselves also have a maximum power output. But once again, this is for on road usage and off-road is fine to light it up.

No President in the history of anywhere would ever spend time to write an EO to make a set of auxiliary car lights illegal. On the list of Presidential concerns, that wouldn't even make the list of things to spend 5 minutes talking to the family fish about.

Better yet, if you have a question like that, strike up a conversation with your local law enforcement officer and he/she will give you the actual answer for where you live. As a matter of fact, your nearest police precinct should have a number to call to ask if something is legal or not. It would suck to get pulled over and say, "But officer, the internet said it was OK!"

 

In CA afik the law is they are legal as long as they are covered when driving on roads.

No such federal law could be passed that would outlaw something like this. It would be down to the states. Such as the CHMSL it's a federal law that it must be installed but after purchase it is up to your individual state whether or not it must be maintained, not all states require it.

 

Each state is different, so check the laws in your state.

In CA I think all you have to do it keep them covered when on the road. I have some small LEDs that I don't cover though and haven't had trouble, but your luck may be different.

A friend got pulled over the other day in CA for his LED lights. He put painter's tape over it and the cop let him off with a warning. I didn't know the law was still enforced, but I do remember the days of the KC Daylighters and knew then that those had to be covered.

DO NOT ask a random cop for legal advice. Not knocking on cops, but there are more than a few out there that don't know the details of several laws. Ask one you know personally or look up your state's revised statutes. Had one tell me once that I could not use my gun to defend myself unless my attacker had a gun. If he came at me with a knife, I could only defend myself with a knife. Pretty sure he was still very green.

 

I'm curious, did your friend get pulled over specifically for his LED's? I see lots of uncovered LED light bars around. Drivers and passenger ft. window tint is illegal here in CA too but that doesn't stop people.

 

Legal or not, be mindful of having them on with approaching traffic !

Selling or buying to a private party must be done thru a dealer with background check
Switch must be lockable and locked when not in use.
Switch must be out of reach of driver, located in trunk/rear of vehicle.
Power must be disconnected when not in use.
10 day waiting period to buy lightbar.
Buy 1 lightbar in a 30 day period.

And rightly so...Light bars kill! I don't understand how anyone needs that much light!

 

If I recall, that was part of his agenda before taking office. You can have a million lightbars on your jeep as long as they are not on while going down the road.

Before I got my Jeep, I asked a local LEO who I have known for several years. He told me that here in Louisiana, you can not drive on a road with more than four lights on at any given time, 2 head lights and 2 fogs, etc. He told me that LA didn't have any specific laws (that he was aware of) requiring off road lights to be covered while driving on road.

Having said that, I often see trucks driving around with fog/ driving style lights on the brush guard/ bull bar along with both fogs and headlights.

On the rare occasion that I turn on either my bumper lights or A pillar lights, I tend to have my finger hovering over the switch in case I encounter another car. I turn them back off if I even see a hint of a glow from a pair of approaching headlights.

To the OP bottom line, I think you'll be safe from prosecution if you were to purchase an LED light bar.

It's the only thing the officer dinged him for. He pretty much never speeds and he is pretty good about following the law. Honestly, I'm surprised that he didn't get dinged for no mud flaps too.

AZ has a max of 35% tint on the front 2 side windows, but I see them blacked out often. I don't think too many cops ding people for it anymore because it seems to happen more often than a few years ago. Or maybe I didn't really notice until now.

 

I just mounted a 20" on my hood and have KC spotlights on the pillars and a 10" lightbar on the ft. hoop. Guess I better start carring roll of blue tape.

 

I got pulled over back in the 90s in FL just for having my Hella fog lights on. I was told they were too bright. No ticket, but had to keep them turned off on roads.

I've been pulled over multiple times for having my DRL's on my light bar on and Cops are unable to tell me why they are illegal besides the fact that Colorado only allows 4 front facing lights to be on at one time. 2 headlights - 2 fog lights. They count my lightbar DRL as 1 light. But my question is, how are the new Jeep Cherokee's legal? They have 6 lights facing the front.

This is typically because it came from the factory like that. Anything that comes from the factory is usually legal per most state DOT laws.

I'm not a fan of Halos at all, BUT how is that really any different than the marker lights on my Dually other than mine are factory??? Headlights and your "marker lights" on the light bar.

 

I was recently pulled over in Pa for not having my A Piller lights covered I was able to have a friend make covers and had to go to court to show them that they were covered to get out of paying a fine. I was explained to that anything over the hood has to be covered so the light cannot shine threw on the roadway.
