Hey guys!

I purchased a 17 wrangler unlimited 6 months ago where I commuted 3 miles a day to work. I also live in a snowy town so I needed it to get through the deep snow.

The last 3 months I changed jobs (it was out of my hands) which now requires me to commute 70 miles to my new office (1 way) plus an extra 200 freeway/highway miles a day 5 days a week to other facilities that I contract with.

My question is, will my wrangler break down quicker from all the freeway driving since its made for mainly off-road and main street driving? Or are they built better these days and there shouldn't be any issues to worry about (at least within the next few years)?

I don't have issue with MPG, I get around 20mpg. I just don't want to push my baby harder than what he's built for.

Like I said before, my job was changed after I had purchased the jeep, so having a more suitable vehicle for long commutes was not even on my radar at the time.

Thank You guys!

As long as you keep up the routine maintenance, it should last you a long time. Keep the undercarriage clean and protected, keep the joints greased (that have fittings), oil(s), and such.

We often drive ours on the highway, in part because we live in the sticks and it is a long drive to most anywhere. I was just doing 80 some mph last night to get dinner.
70 some thousand miles so far with no issues.
The fuel mileage does suck, ours is built up so it only gets 15 or 16 mpg. I would love to get 20 mpg.

I go up to 75-80, but only when I absolutely have to (think emergencies). Otherwise I stay around 65-70. I’m in a 16 year old TJ though. Windy days are by no means any sort of fun! I had a fun day when I had some 2x4s and a couple 4x4s on my roof bars. The wind really loved me that day!

If anything going offroad is harder on a Jeep than highway miles as it is with any vehicle. It can do highway just as good as any other car or truck!

You'll have the same wear you have on any car. If you have large, heavy off-road tires you'll probably go through them quicker, and you'll probably put more wear on your suspension components and ball joints.

I drive mine long distance in the highway frequently.

i have commuted 70 miles one way in my 06 Rubicon went from cumberland md to charlotte nc when i purchase my hardtop round trip all in one day

I'll say that compared to an independent front suspension vehicle, driver fatigue will be harder on you driving a wrangler. I rarely take the jeep on highway trips anymore. Cars and pickups just hold their lane and deal with wind better. I doubt you'll have issues putting miles on the jeep. It's no toyota, but you shouldn't have major issues. My 2015 JKR has required four hydraulic valve lash adjusters (tick tick tick) and all cam followers replaced at 40,000 miles, new battery after two years, rear axle seal 50,000 miles, engine coolant temp sensor at 80,000 miles, oil pump 90,000 miles, radiator cracked and leaking for a few years and just replaced a couple weeks ago. The loom on my engine harness turned to dust in the last few years.

If I read that correctly, that's 88k miles a year. You need an economical, new, comfortable riding car and use the jeep if the weather is really bad. With that many miles driven you will need a backup vehicle. That will be a lot of regular maintenance. Good luck.
Yeah wait.

OP do you really mean 340 miles/day

(70 each way plus 200 to other facilities)?

I don't hesitate to drive my 16 JKUS on 8 hour/~400 mile road trips (each way) a couple of times a year. But that's for a week+ at a time on vacations. And it's exhausting.

But even if you overstated that and meant 140-200 miles a day, that's still 36-50k/year (assuming ~260 days, though I realize that is without vacations).

If you're ANYWHERE in that ballpark you need a second vehicle, specifically a car that does well on the highway and gets much better mileage.

Or another job, crap.

I have been across the country twice, north/south almost border to border more times than I can count and half way down Mexico and back. And when you consider how many mods that are on my vehicle that is amazing. As has already been said keep up on the maintenance you should be golden.

I bought a 13 with 50k miles or so back in 2016. Traded it in with 140k miles. I used to drive it 160 miles a day for work and wheel it most weekends. Jeeps are fun to drive when you're into Jeeps :)

Do you have stock tires? and are you hand calculating your mileage or are you relying on the display. I can get 20 MPG out of my stock wrangler but only if I keep it right at 55 mph. If I get up to interstate speed, 70mph or higher it starts to really drop off, like around 17 or so. The displays are notorious for not being accurate.
